Sheriff’s Report: deputies answer multiple domestic violence calls

Panola County Sheriff Deputies investigated multiple cases of domestic violence or the threat of violence as the Sheriff’s Office received nine reports of assaults and seven reports of harassment from August 5 to August 11, along with 21 other reports from Panola County residents.
On August 6, a Sees Chapel Road resident reported to Deputy John Still she got into an argument with her boyfriend who was intoxicated.
According to the report, the suspect threw a ceiling fan at the resident during the altercation and pushed her down.
The resident suffered a cut on her right elbow.
The suspect verbally abused and threatened the resident in the presence of Deputy Still and was arrested and charged with domestic violence, according to the report.
August 10, Deputy Britton Crawford spoke to a Eureka Road resident who reported her purple semi-automatic 9mm pistol was missing.
According to the report, the resident stated her husband, from whom she is separated, has been taking items from her and threatened to kill her, her brother and then kill himself.
August 11, Dead End Cove, Pope resident received phone calls from a suspect threatening to kill her present husband.
According to the report, the suspect called as Deputy George Renfroe was speaking to the resident and Deputy Renfroe answered the call.
The suspect stated he has a right to speak to the resident for 60 minutes a day.
Deputy Renfroe advised him of his position as a Panola County Deputy and asked him not to harass the resident, according to the report.
The suspect continued to state he has a right to call her and stated he was going to call his lawyer and have the child removed from the residence, according to the report.
Deputy Renfroe advised the suspect that a warrant would be placed for his arrest.
The Panola County Sheriff’s Office received 37 reports from August 4 to 11 which required service from sheriff deputies.
August 5
• Deputy Renfro spoke to an Audrey Road, Courtland resident who stated the suspect hit her in the face and pushed her into a wall at their residence.
According to the report, the suspect pushed the resident in her face in the vehicle while riding to Baesville.
After arriving at their destination on Eureka Road the resident called Batesville Police Department who sent an officer to separate the individuals.
According to the report, the resident left the scene and went to the sheriff’s office to file a report.
• Crouch Road resident stated to Deputy Renfroe someone tried to break into her residence by attacking the door with an unknown object but was unable to make entry.
• Lieutenant Willie Harris investigated a report of harassment where a John Branch Road resident was receiving calls from an unknown individual accusing him of writing back checks.
According to the report, the caller told the resident he wrote a bad check and a warrant was placed for his arrest, but stated they would drop the charges if he sent money to cover the check.
Lieutenant Harris checked the warrant log and stated the resident had no active warrants, according to the report.
• Deputy Maurice Market spoke to a Plum Point Road resident who stated an individual trespassed onto her property and started fighting and threatening her husband.
According to the report, the resident stated the suspect was asked multiple times to leave the property.
August 6
• Quitman Avenue South, Crowder resident reported to Deputy Steven McLarty his Bull Terrier was shot in the back and killed.
According to the report, a witness stated the dog was running around when a man visiting another residence on Quitman Avenue pulled out a hand gun, shot the dog and left in an older model car.
• Deputy McLarty assisted Deputy Mark Allen with a DUI traffic stop on BlackJack Road.
According to the report, Deputy Allen attempted to stop the truck for improper equipment when the truck started to travel at a high rate of speed, threw a beer can out the window and then pulled over.
Deputy McLarty spoke with the driver who stated he had been drinking “a couple of beers.”
According to the report, there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and driver.
The driver was arrested and transported to the Panola County Jail where he agreed to give a breath sample. The driver was charged with DUI second.
• Heafner Road resident reported to Deputy Renfroe an unknown female came to her residence using profanity, shaking and hitting on the door and threatening to beat the resident.
According to the report, the suspect has done this before approximately one year ago.
• Whitten Road resident reported to Deputy Emily Griffin she was receiving countless texts and calls from her ex-husband throughout the day.
She stated she has asked him to stop several times but he refuses to.
According to the report, Deputy Griffin witnessed the resident receive two to three more text messages from the suspect.
The previous day a complaint was filed against the suspect stating he tried to force his way into the residence and continued to ride by the residence, according to the report.
Deputy Griffin spoke to the suspect after the initial complaint and gave him a lawful order to not contact the resident.
The suspect was located and transported to the Panola County Jail.
• Deputy Britton Crawford spoke to a Hadorn Road resident who stated on the night of August 4 she received multiple phone calls from a female who was threatening to “whip” her and “burn her car up”.
According to the report, the resident has had multiple dealings with the suspect and wants the harassment to stop.
• Curtis Road resident reported to Lieutenant Willie Harris stating she wanted her neighbor to remove his three puppies from her porch.
Lieutenant Harris notified the neighbor of the situation who stated the puppies were stolen from his property.
Lieutenant Harris advised both parties to call the sheriff’s office if they needed any further assistance.
August 7
• Deputy Crawford was patrolling the area of Henry Heafner Road and noticed a male subject backing out of a residence shouting at a resident who was holding an object in a defensive manner.
The male subject drove down the road and stopped at another residence and got out of his vehicle.
According to the report, when Deputy Crawford displayed his lights and siren the subject got back into his car again and drove down to another residence. The subject got out of the vehicle and began walking back towards the first residence, but was told to walk back to the back of his vehicle and stay put by Deputy Crawford.
The resident stated she was divorced from the suspect who was the father of her children and continued to state that the suspect pulled into the yard and was asked to leave.
According to the report, the suspect said, “Make me leave” then pushed the resident and grabbed her by the hair.
The resident stated she then grabbed a rack and was going to defend herself when Deputy Crawford pulled onto their road.
The suspect stated he was at the residence to see the kids, but the resident did not want him there.
The suspect was arrested for simple domestic violence and was transported to the Panola County jail.
• Bethleham Road resident reported to Lieutenant Harris that her boyfriend got mad about Facebook and started pulling her hair.
According to the report, the resident’s little cousins broke up the fight. The resident stated she left the scene to report the fight to her father.
When the resident returned home another cousin was at her residence to fight her boyfriend and hit the suspect with a bat across the arm.
The suspect stated he fled from the residence and called 911.
• Mount Olivet Road resident reported to Deputy Allen his red 2014 Suzuki Motorcycle was stolen from his residence.
• Deputy Renfroe responded to Bolton Road, Courtland where the resident stated the suspect spent the night at her residence and was in her room trying on clothes where the resident’s purse was.
The resident stated she didn’t notice the missing $100 until after church. According to the report, the suspect called the house after church asking if she’d dropped a $100 in the floor at the house.
•Deputy Crawford was dispatched to a disturbance on Eureka Road.
According to the report, the resident and suspect were having a dispute over a property line agreement and the suspect had parked a trailer on the resident’s side of the property and the resident wanted it removed.
The resident advised that the suspect had a weapon and was a convicted felon.
Deputy Crawford checked and found that the suspect had a valid CDL and conceal carry permit which lead him to believe the suspect was not a convicted felon.
According to the report, the resident stated she didn’t know the property lines and the land was deeded to her mother.
Deputy Crawford advised the resident that until she gets the property deeded and a proper land description that no clear boundaries could be set for ownership.
• Deputy Harold Lewis located an abandoned vehicle on Mount Level Road which had been there for two weeks and was told by Lieutenant Harris to have the vehicle towed because enough time had been given for the vehicle to be off the roadside.
August 8
• Investigator Terry Smith met with a victim who was injured early Sunday morning. The victim stated he was at a party on Cutoff Road and noticed his cooler missing from his truck.
According to the report, the victim began checking vehicles and located the cooler in the back of another truck and went to get the cooler back.
The victim stated as he was in the back of the truck retrieving the cooler the suspect drove off in the truck and he fell off of the truck receiving injuries to his left ear, face and body. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
According to the report, the suspect stated that some guys were going to jump him so he left the party and didn’t know anyone was in the back of the truck.
• Investigator Smith responded to a fire on Anna’s Cove. According to the report, the owner stated he had some food cooking on his gas grill and left to go to a friend’s house and upon returning home he saw the fire trucks and discovered his residence was on fire. After further investigation the gas grill ignited and exploded causing the fire. According to the report, a neighbor called in a loud explosion. The structure was destroyed.
• Investigator Bryan Arnold spoke to a Highway 51 North, Como resident who reported she had been assaulted on August 6 by her cousin. According to the report, the victim has paperwork where she was treated at Merit Health for an assault.
August 10
• Al Johnson Road resident, Como spoke to Deputy Renfroe stating her boyfriend threw a bottle into the driver’s side window of her white Hyundai.
August 11
• Deputy Crawford noticed what seemed to be an abandoned vehicle in the parking lot of Boss’ old store. He stopped to make sure the vehicle was not stolen or that the property was not being burglarized or vandalized.
According to the report, a female got out of the passenger side of the vehicle and a male walked up from behind the car wash, stating that nothing was wrong, “I just needed to take a leak,” and told Deputy Crawford that he could go.
Deputy Crawford asked the male subject for his name and the subject stated that Deputy Crawford couldn’t just stop them like that. Deputy Crawford stated he was conducting an investigative stop due to the fact that the store is no longer open and that there was a vehicle on the scene that did not belong there.
After checking the male subject’s ID, Deputy Crawford asked him to remain at the rear of the vehicle and he checked the female subject’s ID. The female subject stated she was offering the male subject a ride to go get a drink. According to the report, the male subject continuously attempted to make eye contact with the female subject as Deputy Crawford spoke with her.
Deputy Crawford asked the female if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, to which she replied “no, I don’t do drugs.”
She also stated the male subject was in drug court and could not do drugs either. After getting consent to search the vehicle Deputy Crawford began conducting the search when he noticed the male subject pointing at the back of the front seat. According to the report, Deputy Crawford looked behind the seat and observed a ziplock bag containing a second smaller baggie with a white crystal like substance.
Deputy Crawford asked the male subject to step to the rear of the car and asked him to place his hands on the vehicle. According to the report, the subject refused and ran to the rear of the building and into the woodline as Deputy Crawford attempted to pursue. Deputy Crawford returned to secure the female subject as well as the evidence in the vehicle.
Deputy Crawford requested a narcotics agent and a tow truck. Deputy Renfroe and Deputy Sandy Goss arrived on the scene to assist Deputy Crawford. Deputy Goss stayed with the female subject as the K9 was deployed. The K9 made a track behind the store, around a field and then back to the roadway.
• Deputy Renfroe was dispatched to The Sardis Lake Store due to a caller advising of a pregnant woman needing an ambulance.
According to the report, the caller called back and stated a white and maroon truck picked up the woman. Another caller stated the truck turned on Black Jack Road heading towards the dam and stated they appear to be on drugs.
Deputy Renfroe made contact with the vehicle and asked the driver to step out of the vehicle. After getting consent to search the vehicle from the driver, Deputy Renfroe asked the female passenger to step out of the vehicle. According to the report, during the search of the passenger side, two meth pipes were recovered from a black bag of the passengers with her clothes covering them.
Investigator Jimmy Shannon and a narcotics officer were notified of the situation as Lieutenant Harris assisted Deputy Renfroe with the search. According to the report, while continuing the search Deputy Renfroe found a 30/30 Marlin Rifle along with two other small boxes of drugs and paraphernalia. The narcotics officer took possession of the evidence as both subjects were transported to the Panola County Jail.
• Shiloh Road, Courtland resident reported to Sergeant Tyler Mills that she and her boyfriend got into an argument and that her boyfriend’s mother started throwing her stuff out onto the yard causing an argument between the residents, but stated it never got physical. The mother stated she heard her son and his girlfriend arguing and stated the only thing she threw out was the girl’s make-up bag. The girl and son both stated they were leaving to let things cool down.
• Sees Chapel Road, Sarah resident stated the suspect came to her residence and assaulted her. According to the report, the resident stated the suspect accused her of sleeping with her husband. The resident suffered scratches to her face and a bite mark on the arm.
• Deputy Jeremy Hailey spoke to an Edwards Road, Sardis resident who stated she left her residence traveling west and a white Ford truck came up behind her at a high rate of speed and passed her. According to the report, the driver of the truck then hit his brakes and got out of his vehicle and opened the resident’s car door, using profanity, and got a chainsaw out of his truck and started it, stating he had something for them. The resident stated the driver put the saw back in his truck and left.
The driver of the white ford truck went to the sheriff’s office and spoke with Deputy Crawford about the incident. According to the report, the driver stated he was trying to exit the woods for an emergency and he came in contact with a car sitting in the middle of the road. The driver stated when he attempted to slow down and pass the car sped up and would not allow him to pass. According to the report, the driver was ran into a ditch as he passed the vehicle and stated he stopped to ask them what their problem was. The driver stated the female driver grabbed a box cutter and made threats and aslo stated as he walked to his truck the female tried to run him over.
• Compress Road resident reported to the Panola County Sheriff’s office someone came into his yard and stole his meter box, cut his pole and wire from his trailor house that he’s no longer living in. According to the report, the property is worth approximately $600.
• Deputy Renfroe spoke to a Sardis Lake Drive resident who stated a unknown person wrecked in his yard hitting and destroying his mailbox.
