County’s assessed property values reflect slight dip

By Rupert Howell
Panola County’s assessed property tax value dropped slightly supervisors learned at their July 5 meeting when Deputy Tax Assessor Janie Ard presented the annual recapitalization report that gives a total of Panola’s tax rolls.
Although the decrease is small, 0.197 percent or $537,041, supervisors will have to work to stretch tax dollars to all agencies and departments in the upcoming budgeting season to avoid increasing millage.
Assessed value for 2016 is $272,325,704 compared to 2015 value of $272,862,745.
According to the report there are 454,773 acres in 23,890 parcels assessed. U.S. Government land accounts for 28,301 of those acres while exempt and school land totals 3,925. Other government land totals 6,157.
The report lists $457,312,844 in true value for personal property with $133,532,132 worth of automobiles assessed at $40,061,426 for tax purposes.
True value total of real property is listed at $254,273,713 and is assessed at $154,510,155 for tax purposes.
Supervisors unofficially began the budgeting process Monday when library and Humane Society officials made their annual request for funding.
