Local high school teams face off in Lafayette basketball setting

By Ike House
South Panola and North Panola both participated in summer league games at Lafayette last Thursday with inter county play between the schools.
SP 25 – Lafayette 19
South Panola’s girls were up first against Lafayette’s team and went on a tear against the defense of Lafayette led by sophomore point guard Marshala Doyle. The games were only two short halves but the Tigers were too dominant to be stopped showing promise for the upcoming season.
Going into halftime the Tigers were up by eight. After the break the Lady Tigers had some sloppy play and with turnovers but that were overcome by the play of the returning starters. Sydney Morgan, Chloe Morgan and Breanna Bland helped the Tigers pull out a close win against Lafayette 25-19. The Lady Tigers were led by Doyle with 10 points.
North Panola 32 – SP 24
In the first inter-county game between the Tigers and Cougars, the Cougars were dominant against the Tigers. The second half of the game is where the Cougars earned their money as standout Jamarcus Jones took over the game single handily and scored 10 points.
The post game of Jones and Kenneth Jefferson was too much for a smaller faster Tiger team. The Tigers had some big shots that did not translate into a run which was what the Tigers need to come back as the game wound down. The Cougars held on to their lead and came out with a 32-24 victory. The Cougars were led by Jones with nine points while the Tigers were led by Kendricus Carlton.
South Panola 29 – Lafayette 17
Right after that game the Tigers got a short break and got back on the floor against Lafeytte’s varsity group. The Tigers guard play was too dominant against the Commodores defense. Carlton’s play from the floor was exceptional as he led the way in scoring with 14 points.
The Tigers out rebounded their opposition with Robert Hentz on the glass grabbing a lot of boards that led to second  chance points.
Nick Porter helped out on the defensive end of the floor having three steals in the games. The Tigers led the entire way and got the win 29-17.
NP 30 – Lafayette 19
In the final game of the day the Cougars faced the same Lafayette team. The Cougars played some of the younger guys but were still led by seniors. Vennis Mills and Jarvis Renix who kept everything in flow with stellar passing and three point shots.
Mills flashed some of his big play ability that showed a year ago. Deshaun Smith showed promise with his play on the boards grabbing seven rebounds on the day. He scored six points off of the rebounds that he grabbed. Mills led the way in scoring with 13 points which led to a 30-19 victory for the Cougars.
