Vera M. Stevens Daimwood

Vera M. Stevens Daimwood, formerly of Jackson, died peacefully April 29, 2016 in Houston, TX surrounded by her loving family. Born in Greenwood, in 1921, she is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Joseph Dominic Mamelli, her mother, Evelyn Clarke Mamelli, her husband Milton Wright Stevens, second husband Danny Daimwood, and son Milton Dominic (Nick) Stevens.
Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, Vera lived a wonderful life rooted in family, friends, Italian heritage and a strong Catholic faith.  She embraced her Mississippi roots and was a proud ambassador for Mississippi wherever she traveled. After years of working in advertising, it was only natural that she would later work for the Mississippi Dept. of Economic Development. She chaperoned many young women as they served as “Miss Hospitality” traveling the highways and back roads of the state as well as traveling coast to coast to promote the state she so dearly loved.

An outstanding cook, Vera’s kitchen was always a hub of activity. Saturdays will always be remembered as “spaghetti day.” A bowl of spaghetti and a slice of Primos French bread awaited all family and friends. She would share her love of cooking and community years later as one of the original volunteers at Jackson’s Stew Pot.

A woman of deep faith, Vera lived by the Catholic Italian values instilled by her parents.  She was very active at the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle, attending mass daily until she moved to Clinton, upon her retirement. In Clinton she was a member of Holy Savior parish where she was active in several senior organizations.  Her constant and abiding faith sustained her through many joys and tragedies. Vera lived a full life as a tremendous role model for her children, a loving sister, mother, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother. When her health began to fail she moved to Houston to live with her daughter Sylvia and son-in-law Jack Ross.  We were truly blessed to have her in our lives for so many years and she is dearly missed. Vera leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship and laughter.

Vera is survived by daughters Glenda Bailey (Collins) Batesville; Sylvia Ross (Jack) Houston, TX; Susan Dryja ( Bob) Los Alamos, NM; Elaine Rea (Doug ) Scottsdale, AZ; sons John A. Stevens (Mary Kathryne) Hattiesburg; Carey M. Stevens, Memphis.

The family wishes to thank Vera’s devoted caregiver Candace Sabala – her tender care will forever be appreciated.

The family has asked that memorials be sent to Batesville First United Methodist Church or St. Mary Catholic Church.

A memorial service to celebrate Vera’s life will be scheduled at a later date.
