Weekend traffic stops yield multiple possession charges

By Rupert Howell
Traffic stops and careless driving led to several arrests and charges with possession of contraband and rowdy kids in a Batesville store resulted in relatives being called, according to weekend occurrence reports provided by Batesville Police.
Lieutenant Billy Sossaman’s report of May 6 stated he smelled a familiar odor while on a traffic stop at Highway 35 South. The officer’s report said that he saw a green leafy substance in the floorboard and after checking the ash tray found what appeared to be “blunts.”
“A search of the vehicle’s center console revealed a small plastic bag containing a green leafy substance and two cigar wrapped ‘blunts’ of marijuana,” according to  Sossaman’s report. Jamithrea Moton was placed into custody and charged with possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle and given a trial date of May 18.
Patrolman Scott Cagle’s report of the same evening revealed a vehicle being pulled over for no tag light, from which the smell of marijuana was being emitted.
Officers located two $5 bills under the  passengers seat containing, “alleged marijuana” and Ladairrius Johnson admitted to ownership.
He was charged with no tag light and possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle.
A report of an “intoxicated driver” came in and officer Scott Cagle located the vehicle soon after at Highway 6 and Lakewood Drive Saturday afternoon.
Cagle followed the vehicle which turned into Sonic in front of oncoming traffic according to the report. Cagle’’s report stated he talked to the driver who had a suspended drivers license.
The report said that while the suspect was looking for her license he noticed an unmarked pill bottle and was advised it contained Xanax. Four more alleged Xanax pills were found following a search when it was learned that Vuanita Powers could not show proof of a prescription.
She was placed into custody and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and driving while license suspended and careless driving.
Lt. Sossaman was greeted later Saturday afternoon by a bat-wielding female in the roadway on Hayes Street. He was answering a disturbance call.
Sossaman’s report revealed  that the female put the bat in a car parked in middle of the road when she saw his patrol car. The female, Alyiah Scott, was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct and transported to Panola County Jail.
Later Saturday Patrolman Victoria Johnson was dispatched to Shadow Lane where an unlicensed all-terrain-vehicle  was being driven down a public street. The subject was advised to keep the vehicle off the street according to the report.
A possible disturbance at Walmart resulted in two juveniles being picked up by relatives, according to another report by Lieutenant Sossaman whose report stated, “Juvenile subjects had been playing in the store upsetting other adult customers.”
