Sardis firemen with the assistance of the Lions and Rotary Clubs, Southern Baptist Disaster Team and the American Red Cross were among 22 volunteers who spread out over the municipality Saturday checking and installing smoke alarms for Sardis residents.

“We even had a fireman from Holly Springs help us,” Fire Chief Chuck Moore reported.
City officials including Mayor Billy Russell and alderman Tommy Rayburn participated in some of the morning events as did city works director Bubba McDowell.

Sandy Patrick who is the Red Cross district program specialists said the group hopes to install 400 smoke alarms in the project which coincides with the National Home Fire Protection Campaign.
The volunteers began with sausage and biscuits at the Sardis fire station on Lee Street that served as command post when the volunteers broke into small groups and canvassed the town’s streets and neighborhoods
