Recent history shows the North Delta and Delta Academy girls have engaged in some competitive battles on the basketball court, but Tuesday night was not one of them.

Led by Janie Brasell’s 17 points, the Lady Green Wave held Delta to two second half points on their way to a 57-17 romp in North Delta’s season opener.

North Delta (2-2) held a slim 18-15 lead at halftime before outscoring the Lady Raiders 24-0 in the third quarter to take a commanding lead. Brasell scored 10 points in the quarter on a pair of three-pointers and two jumpers. The sophomore guard also finished the contest with five rebounds, two assists and one steal on five-of-11 shooting from the floor.

Megan Bollinger followed Brasell in scoring with 16 points including 12 in the first half. The junior nailed a three-pointer at the end of the first quarter to tie the game at seven.

Bollinger’s put-back of a missed jumper gave North Delta the lead for good at 11-10 with 3:38 remaining in the half before adding a pair of free throws at the 2:10 mark for a 18-12 Green Wave advantage. Madison McBride sank two free throws for Delta in the closing minutes of the half. The Lady Raiders would not break the scoring column again until 4:42 left in the game on a Sarah Craig jumper.

Shelby Province chipped in with six points, five boards and two blocked shots for North Delta while Lauren Snyder and Ginger Stephens added five points each. Sarah Johnson garnered eight steals, five rebounds and three points. Anna Lloyd contributed with four steals and four points with Lindsey Douglas rounding out the scoring with one point and two steals.

The Green Wave boys opened its roundball season with a tough loss to the Raiders.
Ridge Simmerman paced North Delta with 14 points followed by Will Hartzell’s 10 first-half points. Raider Renz Delubio led all scorers with 24 points including five three-pointers. Caleb Bryant registered 13 points while Herbert Thompson added 12 for Delta.

The Raiders came out smoking to begin the game as Delubio canned three consecutive treys to give Delta an 11-4 lead. North Delta then responded with a 14-0 run to grab an 18-11 advantage at the 6:43 mark of the second quarter.

Hartzell got the rally started with a trey from the left side before later adding another three-ball to give North Delta a 14-11 lead. Bailey Sullivant’s spinning jumper in the lane extended the Wave lead to 18-11. The lead was short lived however as Delubio nailed a trey to tie the game at 18 with 4:12 left in the half.

The second half saw the Raiders gain a 35-25 lead in the third before Dennis King drained a three-pointer from the left side at the 3:42 mark. North Delta cut the Raider lead to four twice in the fourth quarter but could not get any closer as Delubio connected on four-of-seven free throws down the stretch.

King chipped in with five points for North Delta while Sullivant, Hunter Baker and Cole Devazier all collected four points. Joseph Wright and Will Kidder finished with three and two points each.
Jr. High

Both teams split its respective junior high contests as the North Delta girls cruised to a 25-8 victory while Delta eased past the Green Wave 55-33.

Mary Emily Morris led the junior high Lady Wave with 12 points followed by Faith Bollinger with four. Payton Scott, Blakely Denman, Ally Alford and Hannah Bollinger all had two points with Emy Cay Donaldson finishing with one point.

Peyton Neal paced the junior high boys with eight points followed by Luke Lewis with six. Alex Greenlee and Tyler Holland added five points each while Matt Burchfield garnered four points with Devazier finishing with two.

North Delta begins a three-game road trip  tomorrow at Magnolia Heights starting at 1 p.m before traveling to Tunica Monday then opening up district 1-AA play at Indianola Tuesday at 3 p.m.
