Candlelit Picnic offers taste of Farm to Table cuisine

A three-course dinner picnic is being hosted Saturday, October 25 on the grounds of Home Place Pastures in Como to showcase 4Rivers Fresh Foods, a regional food hub.  The dinner for the Farm To Table Candlelit Picnic will prepared by Miles McMath, master chef at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Organizers advise participants to bring a blanket and/or lawn chairs. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at 4riversfoods.com or by calling 901.326.1627.  Space is limited.

The dinner will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include a farm tour.

Home Place Pastures is a family-owned farm dating back to 1871.  The Bartlett  family is transitioning the farm into a sustainable, pastured pork operation.  Pastured pork means the animals are free to roam the pastures and the woods, enjoy a lot of sunshine and grass, and add to the fertility of the farm’s soil.

“Our happy healthy pigs yield higher quality, tastier meat,” said Marshall Bartlett, president.  The Candlelit Picnic will feature Home Place Pastures pork along with locally grown vegetables and locally made ice-cream.

Following the dinner, everyone is invited to stay and enjoy live music.

Chef McMath resides with his family in Hernando where he raises much of his own food.  He has been the owner of three successful restaurants, and has recorded over 100 cooking segments for the local television show Mid South Living.  McMath maintains the garden at St. Jude where he, along with his volunteer gardeners, raise mushrooms, lettuce and asparagus.

4Rivers Fresh Foods was established in 2013 as an online farmers market where customers can order bags of locally grown produce weekly.  The 2014 season for bags will conclude on Nov. 20.

Established under the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, 4Rivers has recently received its nonprofit status.  To learn more about 4Rivers, go to www.4riversfoods.com.
