More guns are reported stolen from car in city

By John Howell
Batesville police on Friday reported another overnight theft of a gun from a vehicle parked outside a home.

Deputy Police Chief Don Province said that two Brunelli shotguns were taken Thursday night or Friday morning from the vehicle parked on Brinkley Lane.

The theft was somewhat similar to the Tuesday night/Wednesday morning theft of a .45 caliber Springfield semi-automatic handgun from a vehicle parked on nearby College Street. In the College Street theft, the thief or thieves broke the vehicle window to gain access to the handgun but passed over other guns in the vehicle.

The Benelli shotguns taken from the Brinkley Lane vehicle are valued at about $1,500 each, Province said. The owner told police that he thought the vehicle had been locked. However, no evidence of forced entry was evident, Province said.

Police urge vehicle owners to remove valuables from vehicles, leave vehicles parked overnight in lighted areas and to adopt other common sense practices to avoid becoming a victim of theft.
