A defendant told Judge Bill McKenzie in Wednesday’s session of Batesville Municipal Court the reason he discharged a firearm in city limits was because he felt threatened.
Mose Cathy, 313 Patton Lane, Batesville, entered a guilty plea to discharging a firearm in city limits.
Cathey told the judge someone was shooting into his house and threatening him and that’s why he shot the gun.
“ This is not the Wild West,” the judge said. “Call the police if you feel threatened.”
The firearm also happened to be stolen and was returned to its owner in Senatobia. Cathy was not charged in the theft.
He was fined $331.
Brejuan Byres, 3946 Eureka Rd., Batesville, had a case for contempt of court continued. The charge stemmed from Byres’ failure to complete his work release assignment ordered previously in city court.
He told the judge he worked 17 days and gave a doctor’s excuse to a man named Mike at the Civic Center.
“He told me he would give the excuse to Rene (municipal court clerk),” Byres said.
The judge released him from jail and told him to return with the proper paperwork next week.
Monique Booker, 1120 11th St., Lambert, paid old fines prior to court for contempt of court-old fines. Those fines were entered.
Jeffery Stiles, 118 Dickey Dr , Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to simple assault causing bodily injury to Jennifer Johnson on May 31.
A trial was set for July 9.
Sammy Barksdale, 4238 Curtis Road, Batesville, had simple assault and pettit larceny charges dismissed after affiants Brandon Faulkner and Sharonda Vaughn failed to appear to prosecute.
Pamela Deasin, 130 Johnson, Batesville had a domestic violence simple assault case dismissed after her husband, Michael Deason, failed to appear to prosecute.
Brondreekcus Clark, 205 Leonard St. Apt C, Batesville, was sentenced to five days in jail which he already served while awaiting trial for public drunk and open container.
Charles Edward Cox, 118 Williams Street, Batesville was also sentenced to five days in jail which he served while awaiting trial for public drunk and open container.
Ricky Henderson, 125 Jackson Street, Batesville, was given credit for time served for public drunk and open container. He also had old fines of $522 due since May 2014. The judge told him he could be released from jail when he paid his fines in full.
Nathan V. Smith, 104 Martha Street, Tutwiler, entered a guilty plea to shoplifting clothes, DVDs, speakers, lighters, and other items worth $324.75 from Walmart. He was fined $1,131 due in 30 days.
Latonya Smith, 107 S. Laura Street, Webb; Rashunda Rodgers, 110 Courtney Rd., Tutwiler, and Susan Rodgers, 269 Oil Mill Rd., Tutwiler, all entered guilty pleas for the same charges as Smith. All four entered the city work release program for 20 days in lieu of paying $1,131 in fines.
They were all banned from Walmart.
