Woman forfeits gun after shooting it in city

By Emily D. Williams
A Batesville woman was not pleased when Judge Bill McKenzie told her she would not get her gun back after she was found guilty of discharging a firearm in city limits.
Officer Ruby Myers testified she received a call from dispatch about shots fired on Patton Lane around lunch time on June 7.

“Dispatch actually received several calls about the shots,” Myers testified.

Sharonda Harris, 109 Clinton, Batesville, told the judge she did fire shots but it was to scare Jessica Cauthen who had been upset with her in the past.

“She called threatening me,” Harris said.

McKenzie found the defendant guilty and she was fined $242.

“Are you aware we have a law in Batesville that you cannot shoot guns in city limits?” McKenzie asked.

“I am now,” Harris replied.

“You had time to call the police. The point is we can’t make the same mistakes over,” he added.
“Can I get my gun back?” Harris asked.

“No. It will get you in trouble. A gun is going to get you sent to the penitentiary,” McKenzie replied.
