Pope Junior High closed out its home football season Tuesday night on a down note with an 8-6 loss to Coffeeville.
The Bulldogs’ only score came in the third quarter when Demetrius Market stripped a Coffeeville running back of the ball and raced 35 yards for a touchdown. Market was then stopped inside the one-yard line on the two-point conversion in what turned out to be the deciding factor in the game.
Coffeeville’s defense also accounted for its only touchdown of the game in the second quarter as L. J. Spearman intercepted a pass and raced 81 yards for the score.
Pope’s last chance at victory ended at the Coffeeville 44-yard line as quarter back Tyler Pogue was sacked for a 10-yard loss on the final play of the game.
Pogue finished the night five-of-13 passing for 42 yards. Johnathon McMurry led the Bulldogs with four catches for 26 yards while Stevon Hill had one catch for 16 yards. Market was the leading ground gainer on the night with 15 rushes for 44 yards.
Pope will end its season Tuesday night at Water Valley in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
