Convoy of Hope arrives Saturday in Batesville

The Convoy of Hope will arrive in Batesville on Saturday, bringing free food and services to be distributed at the Batesville Civic Center starting at 10 a.m.

Volunteers were preparing the Civic Center on Thursday, erecting a stage and arranging clothing on racks for distribution.

The project is sponsored by 30 area churches in cooperation with the international Convoy of Hope ministry. Dr. David Ball of Batesville is Convoy of Hope liaison and has been joined by several hundred volunteers to help with the massive aid giveaway.

Planners expect 3,000 people to come to the Civic Center for the free groceries, clothing and services valued at $300 to $400.

Convoy of Hope is sending a semi-trailer filled with groceries. Donated clothing, medical and dental checkups, haircuts, family portraits and Bibles will also be distributed at no cost. Spiritual and family counseling will be available for anyone who wants it.

Representatives from a host of community resources will be on hand to help people who need more help than will be available during the one-day event.

Free services also include a job fair and help with GED and reading skills. A closely monitored Kids Zone will offer activities for children including carnival games and inflatables, face painting and balloons. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served.

Everyone is welcome, volunteer coordinator Mary Pearl Robertson said. “Just come.”

Golf carts and drivers will be on hand to transport handicapped people. Elevator access is also available in the building.
