Warner McBride told The Panolian Monday that he will not seek another term as District 10 Representative, saying he is serving his last year in the Mississippi House of Representatives.
McBride has served in the position since 1992 when he unseated long time incumbent Harry Bryan.
McBride has recently run unsuccessfully in a special election to fill an unexpired term for Northern District Highway Commissioner. Prior to the highway commissioner opening, he had seriously considered running for Speaker of the House of Representatives following this year’s election. The speaker is elected by members of the House.
McBride said although several house members continue to support him, the votes were “close, but not quite there,” for the speaker post.
“Obviously if I had a chance in the House leadership I would continue,” McBride stated.
Ironically, McBride’s first campaign called for term limits. He now explains that term limits were put out for the voters to decide and “people voted against it.”
McBride quickly learned that in order to be effective, a legislator has to get into a position of authority to bargain.
“During my time in the State Legislature, I have had increasing opportunities to take on leadership roles for our region and State, most recently as Chairman of the House Transportation Committee.
“If you’re chairman you’ve got bargaining power,” he said, explaining that often internal politics within the House determined where the money goes once allocated.
McBride emphasized, “It’s (elected office) not a life time career. It’s a public service. There comes a time for fresh ideas and fresh energy. That’s what I’ve always said, what I believe and now what I practice.”
In his prepared announcement McBride states, “My family and I sincerely appreciate the support from the community that we have enjoyed since 1992. It has been one of the greatest privileges and highest honors of my life to represent our community in the House of Representatives. After prayerful consideration, I have made the decision not to seek re-election. I was elected at age 35 to share the opportunity of shaping the futures of the next generation. I feel it is time now for a member of the next generation to have the same opportunity for service that I have had.
“My first priority has always been standing up for the best interests of Panola, Lafayette and Tallahatchie Counties,” McBride added.
McBride stated that he is proud to have been in position to promote Christian values of the community as well as much needed funding for those in need after natural disaster struck the state during his terms.
“Until my term is completed at the end of 2011, I will continue to work hard and fulfill my responsibilities to the people of my district.”
