Green Wave varsity sweeps Indianola

Bryan ‘B’ Nickle must have thought he was still on the football field Friday night.

   Just as he did on the gridiron this season for the Green Wave, the North Delta senior sliced and diced his way past Indianola Academy to the tune of 23 points as North Delta picked up their first District 1-AA  victory of the season with a 58-52 victory over the Colonels.

  In other games, the North Delta Lady Green Wave improved to 1-1 in district play and 10-4 overall with a tough 38-28 decision over Indianola.

NDJH Girls

The North Delta junior high girls’ squad improved its record to 13-1 with a 44-24 verdict as Erin Snider led all scorers with 20 points, 11 rebounds and six steals.

Hastings Neal followed Snider with nine points and seven steals as North Delta blew open a close game by out-scoring the Colonels 14-2 in the fourth quarter.

Peyton Rico added six points while Callie Blake Masterson chipped in with four points to go along with four steals. Courtney DuBravec rounded out scoring with three points.

NDJH Boys

Indianola did however salvage one game by taking  a 38-28 win over the North Delta junior high boys. Tyler Beard led the Green Wave with seven points while Bailey Sullivant followed with six. Sam Copeland, Nathan Simmerman and Bradley all contributed with five points each as North Delta fell to 3-4 on the season.

ND Varsity Boys

In the varsity boys contest, North Delta, (4-1; 1-1) took a 24-15 halftime lead as Jim Tom Copeland tallied 10 first-half points to pace the Wave. Copeland would end the night with 13 points.

Matthew Barefoot knocked down a pair of three-pointers that gave North Delta a 39-28 lead with 2:17 remaining in the third period before Copeland’s layup less than a minute later extended the Green Wave lead to 43-31.

Nickle then went to work in the fourth period by scoring 10 of his 19 second-half points after a Matt Shamoun basket cut the North Delta lead to 45-41 midway through the quarter. Nickle scored on back-to-back trips down the floor to increase the lead to 49-41 at the 3:25 mark.

Barefoot followed Nickle and Copeland with 11 points while Derrick Shawn added five. Corbin Baker and Renic Greenlee registered three and one point each.

ND Varsity Girls

In the varsity girls matchup, Bradi Beard recorded a rare triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 tips as the Lady Wave jumped to a 16-5 first-quarter lead. Indianola responded however by out-scoring North Delta 10-3 in the second quarter on a pair of treys by Swayze Carithers to close the gap to 19-15 at halftime .

The Lady Colonels took their only lead of the game as Tyler Domino drilled a three-pointer with 4:21 left in the third to give Indianola a 22-21 advantage. That lead would be short lived however as North Delta went on a 13-0 run to close the period.

Hanna Greenlee led the outburst with all six of her points coming in the period. Laci DuBravec’s putback of her own missed shot at the buzzer gave the Lady Wave a 34-22 lead heading into the final quarter.

Neither team could find the basket in the fourth period as North Delta was without a field goal over the final eight minutes while Indianola hit their only shot from the field with 38 seconds remaining in the contest.

Madison Greenlee pulled down 12 boards to go along with six points. DuBravec added seven while Katelyn Still registered six points and five steals. Hanna Waldrip finished with one point.

All four North Delta teams came away with easy home victories Thursday night against Calhoun Academy as the varsity boys won 69-30 while the girls squad eased past the Cougars 61-17.

Beard led with a game high 16 points for the Lady Green Wave  while Madison Greenlee chipped in with 11 points. Other scorers included DuBravec with nine points, Still added eight, Charla Shea Darby followed with six points while Waldrip and Hanna Greenlee rounded out the scoring with five and four points each.

Copeland poured in 25 points in the varsity boys rout of Calhoun. Greenlee added 10 points while Nickle and Baker added nine and seven points each. Bailey Guckert and Shawn finished with five points while Zach Inman and Tyler Lee scored two points each.

Both junior high teams were victorious as the Lady Waves romped over Calhoun 53-14 while Bradley Booth and Sam Copeland added 15 and 10 points each to help guide the boys to a 29-25 victory. 

After hosting Winona in non-district action Monday, the Green Wave will play two more games before the holiday season.

Friday, the teams travel to West Memphis for district games starting at 4 p.m. with Jr. High and varsity games only.

Saturday, the team will host Marvell in non-district action beginning at 2 p.m.
