ND recognizes spring sports athletes

North Delta School held its Spring sports banquet last Monday afternoon, May 17, in the school cafeteria with awards and plaques awarded in six different sports.

The first awards of the night were given to the boys golf team who captured the  North AA State championship. Under the leadership of head coach Dan Werner, the Green Wave won Academy A North State last season as well.

Team members include: Corbin Baker, Bailey Gurkert, Alan Larson, Johnathan Mackey and Colton Robison. Larson was awarded the low medalist award based of the lowest scores combined of the season.

The North Delta girls track team gave a solid performance as the Lady Wave 4×100 meter relay team consisting of Linsey Hebert, Katelyn Still, Crystal Contresas and Vicki Johnson finished fourth in the district meet and advanced to the North State Championship. Hebert, a Northwest Community College softball signee, was given the Outstanding Track award after a third place finish in the high jump at the North State meet.

Johnson also advanced to North State by finishing third in the 100-meter run. Other members of the team are: Hillari Plummer, Hannah Waldrip and Bradi Beard.

The junior high and high school boys track and field teams finished strong in the district and North State meets. Parker Jones was given the Most Outstanding Field award finishing third in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Will Magee took home the Distance award while Taylor Morris won the Junior High Best Sprinter Award.

Ethan Taylor won the Most Outstanding Field Award by competing in high jump, long jump and triple jump. The junior qualified for North State in all three events while advancing to the state meet in the triple jump where he finished third.

Jeramiah Watson was named Best Sprinter after running in the 100, 200, and 400 meters. The junior won the 100-meter dash at North State and finished third in State in the long jump. Bryan Nickle received the Best Distance award.

The last awards of the night were given to the junior high and high school baseball teams who finished the season under head coach T. J. Douglas. The Junior High squad ended with a 7-4 record on the year, The “Most Improved Player” award went to Collin Phillips while Skylar Lawson received the top pitching award. Ridge Simmerman won the highest ‘on base percentage’ award. Other award winners were Tyler Beard – Golden Glove Award and William Dean – Highest Batting Average.

North Delta placed five players on the District 1-2A All-Conference squad as Jim Tom Copeland and Michael Magee were name to the first team while catcher Derrick Shawn, Ethan Taylor and Austin Gant garnered second team honors.

Copeland led the Wave, who finished with a 13-9 record, with a .483 on base percentage while leading the pitching staff with a 0.95 earned run average and 48 strikeouts.

Opponents hit .187 off the junior right-hander this spring. Senior Geri Lamm recorded the team’s highest batting average at .415 while Bailey Guckert won the Golden Glove award by posting a .904 fielding percentage while committing only four errors the entire season.
