Max “Pete” Hamlin Arnold

CLARKSDALE–Max “Pete” Hamlin Arnold, 75, died Friday January 15, 2010, at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were Sunday at Rosehill Cemetery in Sardis.

Arnold was a Korean War veteran in the U.S. Army and a member of Lyon Baptist Church. He was retired from Illinois Central Railroad.

Survivors include: his wife of 53 years, Pauletta Hailey Arnold of Clarksdale; one daughter, Mary Helen Arnold King of Clarksdale; one brother, Austin A. Arnold of Diamondhead; one sister, Karen Arnold Bloodworth of Batesville and one grandson.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

BATESVILLE—Hattie Mae Frazier, 89, died Saturday January 16, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh C.M.E. Church in Sardis. Rev. Curtis Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Shiloh C.M.E. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Frazier, born Jan. 29, 1920, in Sardis, to the late Tom Cooper and Rosa Rudd Cooper, was a retired cafeteria worker for Patton Lane High School and Batesville Elementary School. She was a member of Shiloh C.M.E. Church.

Survivors include: her husband, Shedrich Frazier of Batesville;  three  daughters, Joyce F. McKinney of Sardis, Brenda Nash and Rosa Marie Hughes, both of Memphis; two sons, James Edward Brassel and Shedrich Frazier Jr. of Memphis; one sister Earnestine McCain of Batesville; one brother, Tom Cooper Jr. of Memphis; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and and two great-great-grandchildren.

James Wesley Mosley

OXFORD—James Wesley Mosley, 82, died Friday, January 8, 2010, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis.

Services were at South Hopewell Church in Oxford, Saturday. Rev. Terry Wortham Sr. officiated.  Burial was in  Orwood Cemetery in Water Valley. Seven Oaks Funeral Home had charge.

Mosley, born April 27, 1927 to the late Commodore Joy and Ollie May Johnson Rockette, served in the Navy for WWII and was a member of Sand Springs Methodist Church and South Hopewell Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Dean Woods Mosley.

Survivors include his wife Willie Mae Mosley of Oxford, step-son, Charles Woods of Oxford; five brothers, Willie C. Willingham and L. P. Joy, both of Oxford L.A. Joy of Water Valley and James A. Joy of Pittsburgh, Pa., Hossie Rockette of Batesville; two sisters, Ollie Nell Sims of Chicago, Ill. and Edna Irene Barr of Memphis, TN; step-sister, Claudia Bibbs of Batesville; four sisters, Annie White of Oxford, Dorothy Fondren of Batesville, Lula Pratcher of Memphis,  and Nina Hervey of Detroit, Mich.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Van Bramlett Palmertree

SARDIS—Van Bramlett Palmertree, 63, died Friday, January 15, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Ray-Nowell Funeral Home in Senatobia.

Palmertree, born Jan. 17, 1946, to the late Van Venson Palmertree and Mildred DeLoach Palmertree, was a welder. He worked with the youth in the community in the Boy Scouts of America. His talent for music began at South Panola while playing drums for the school band and continued into the ‘60s as he entertained in bands and clubs throughout the south as well as back up for Jerry Lee Lewis and Conway Twitty.

He loved nature and took frequent walks on the Sardis Lake Nature trail and Tallahatchie River fishing trips.

Survivors include: his former wife, Therese Kaiser Palmertree; two daughters, Yvonne Palmertree Fields and Rachel Palmertree Stewart; three sons, Riley Martin Palmertree, Jason Palmertree and Robbie Palmertree; one sister, Yvonne Palmertree Chrestman; four brothers, Lael Palmertree, Johnny Palmertree, Jimmy Palmertree, and Kerry Palmertree and four grandchildren, Katie, Kyle, Courtney and Olivia.

Margie Beatrice Carpenter Weatherspoon

SUNFLOWER—Margie Beatrice Carpenter Weatherspoon, 74, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland. She was the mother of Janice Carol Cox of Batesville.

Services were Wednesday at Meredith Nowell Funeral Home. Burial was in Rosemound in Tutwiler. Meredith Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Weatherspoon was a sitter and housekeeper. She was a Baptist.

Survivors along with her daughter include: one daughter, Margie Diane Waldo of Bruce; two sons, Richard Lynn Carpenter of Calhoun City and Kenneth Earl Carpenter of Drew; nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Ernest B. Willingham

 BATESVILLE—Ernest B. Willingham, 96, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Bethlehem M.B. Church. Rev. Jeffery McMullen will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. at New Bethlehem M.B. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Willingham, born Jan. 26, 1913, in Oxford to Callie Willingham and Edith Tatum, was a retired insurance agent and funeral director for Cooley’s Mortuary. He was a member of New Bethlehem M.B. Church where he was a Deacon, on the Deacon Board, Clemmon’s Lodge No. 8, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Church Treasurer, Church Bus Driver, and Grave Allotment Care Taker.

Survivors include: three daughters, Sarah Reynold, Edith Willingham and Constance Willingham, all of Batesville; seven sons, Doyle Willingham of Sardis, Joe Willingham, Walter Willingham, Michael Willingham, Ricky Willingham, all of Batesville,  Jimmie Willingham, of Oxford and Willie J. Willingham of Compton, Calif.; three sisters, Rose Willingham and Bertha Willingham, both of Sardis and Bernice Rhea of Beloit, Wis.; one brother, Earl Willingham of Memphis; 34 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
