Chris Brown has been at North Delta School only a few weeks, but Friday night the sophomore hit perhaps two of his most important shots of the young season.

Brown calmly sank a pair free throws with five seconds remaining to lift the Green Wave to a 44-42 victory over West Memphis Christian in District 1-AA action. The victory moved North Delta into a three-way tie for first place with West Memphis and Marshall Academy.

In other varsity action, the North Delta girls hit 10 three-pointers in route to a 57-37 victory over the Lady Black Knights. The teams split the junior high contests as the Lady Wave received 22 points from Charla Shae Darby as they doubled up West Memphis 40-20. The Knights salvaged one game by downing the junior high boys 53-28.

After a West Memphis turnover with six seconds showing on the clock, Brown was fouled on the following inbound play by Jordan Blann then proceeded to sink the free throws. The Black Knights then had one last shot at victory, but David Robilio’s half-court desperation shot was off the mark as the horn sounded.

North Delta (5-3;3-1) took a 42-40 lead on Jim Tom Copeland’s old fashion three-point play with 3:36 left in the contest. Copeland led the Green Wave in scoring with 11 points on the night. North Delta took a 31-29 lead heading into the final period on Geri Lamm’s putback of a Brown missed three-pointer with two seconds.

The Green Wave raced out to a 11-4 lead after one quarter of play on a pair of baskets by Derrick Shawn and a three pointer by Corbin Baker. West Memphis rebounded in the second quarter, outscoring the home team 13-7 on the strength on Robilio’s 11 points as North Delta took a slim 18-17 lead into the locker room.

Brown followed Copeland with 10 points while Baker added eight. Shawn contributed with seven points and Bryan Nickle and Lamm finished out the scoring with four points each.

North Delta shot 18-of-55 (33 percent) from the field while the Black Knights finished 18-of-34 (53 percent) from the floor. Robilio led all scorers with 26 points on 9-of- 26 shooting.
