Lady Cougars fall to Lafayette while Cougars prevail

The North Panola Cougars split a pair of district games as they traveled to Lafayette County Tuesday night.

Led by Cameron Shorty’s 11 points, the North Panola boys came away with a 45-41 victory over the Commodores to run their record to 2-1 in district play and 6-5 overall.

Ricky Hunt followed Shorty in scoring with nine points as North Panola jumped out to a 11-2 lead after the first quarter to hang on for the victory. Brandon Bagwell added eight points while Darius Loveberry chipped in six. Marque Phillips registered five while Deunta Howard and Terrance Turman rounded out the scoring with four and two points each.

In the opening game of the night, the undefeated Lady Commodores received 15 points each from Shaquilla Isom and Nikki McChristian to ease past the No. 5 ranked Lady Cougars 55-37.

Jenisha Jackson led North Panola, (9-2; 2-1) with 12 points followed by Brittany Patton with 11 points. Catonya Newsom contributed seven points while Audrey Taylor added three points. Ceasare Jackson and Angelica Davidson finished with two points each.

North Panola will be back in action as they host the Cougar Classic Monday through Wednesday of next week.

Both Cougars teams will open up the tournament Monday night against Charleston. Tuesday the Cougars will tangle with West Tallahatchie and will then conclude Wednesday by facing off against Independence. The girls will play all three games at 7 p.m. followed by the boys at 8:30.
