The Plains of Auburn is a great place for football most of the time but it is hard to get to. Either a hard drive or fly to Atlanta and drive the little over a hundred miles down I-85.
That’s not a bad thing except when these morons can’t seem to figure out how important to everything it is for gasoline to be available. This country runs on gasoline for God’s sake and it’s just like the mid ‘70s again: wait in line to buy it.
I sat in one line just south of Atlanta for an hour and fifteen minutes to get thirty dollars worth. I guess I was glad the smaller rental car I had didn’t burn as much as my Tahoe. Then before I turned in the rental I had to go to two different stations to get enough so I wouldn’t have to pay the eight bucks a gallon Hertz charges if they have to fill it up.
Week 5 that I was going off on above had a few bright spots for the conference. The Ole Miss – Florida game was the best of the weekend. One of the best in the whole thing to me was when Ole Miss had stopped Florida at mid-field and they were punting from inside the 50.
You’ll see in college and the NFL where the punting team will not snap the ball and let the play clock run out, then take an intentional delay of game penalty so they can back up five yards. That way their punter can try to drop the kick in close and pin the receivers back up against their own goal line. That’s a very hard proposition for any punter to do especially when he has to alter his kick stroke.
The only time I’ve ever seen a coach decline the distance like coach Nutt did was Steve Spurrier several years ago.
After the punting team gets the delay call, you simply tell the Referee that you want to decline the distance or yardage penalty. The yardage part of ANY penalty can be declined. The time I saw Coach Spurrier do that he was at Florida and they were in a tough one at South Carolina with Lou Holtz as the Gamecock coach then. After the Gators declined the distance penalty, ole Coach Holtz did the same thing again and held the snap. Again, Spurrier declined the distance so Coach Holtz just went on and kicked. One of those situations only an official would really appreciate.
The weather is right for football and was at the Northwest – Delta game the other night but way too many of you are missing a good thing.
Get out and support our Rangers and the area high schools.
It is not a hard thing to do to get over to see Ole Miss, State, Memphis or even Delta State play either and a great way to spend time with the family. Enjoy this great game. You can always Tivo the ones on TV.
