A.G. Evans

COLDWATER–A.G. Evans, 81, died Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at his residence.

Services are today at 1 p.m. at Ebenezar M.B. Church in Como. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pate-Jones Funeral Home of Senatobia has charge.

Survivors include: his wife, Daisy Mae Evans of Coldwater; three daughters, Donna Rena Jones of Meadville, Pa., Aza Booze of Redstone, Ala., Claire Wilson of Hopemill, N.C.; six sons, Eugene Evans of Senatobia, Willie Roy Evans of Como, Larry Evans of San Antonio, Billy Evans of Southaven, Aaron Gerald Evans of Crowder and Percy Evans of Coldwater; one sister, Arlene Thompson of Byhalia; three brothers, L.C. Evans of Senatobia, James Roy Evans of Memphis and Audley Evans Jr. of Chicago; 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Jewel  Etoyle White Helmes

BATESVILLE- Jewel “Nannie” Etoyle White Helmes, 92, died Friday, September 5, 2008, at her residence.

Services were Saturday at Enon Baptist Church. Rev. James Clutter officiated. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Helmes, born Aug. 6, 1916, in Chickasaw County, to the late Hosey Newton and Margaret Caroline Martin White, was a member of Enon Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by: Margaret Sides, Ginger Helmes Gray and Kyle Helmes.

Survivors include: two daughters, Dorothy Nell Helmes Roberson and Theresa “Sissy” Helmes Moore, both of Batesville; four sons, Billy Loise Helmes, Bobby Frank Helmes and Tony Newton Helmes, all of Batesville and Jimmy Dale Helmes of Pope; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The family asks that memorials be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Plaza, Memphis, Tenn. 38105 or Enon Baptist Church, 7420 Dummyline Rd., Batesville, Miss. 38606.

Catherine Laverne Hubbard Scoggins

POPE- Catherine Laverne Hubbard Scoggins, 82, died Sunday, September 7, 2008.

Services are today at 2 p.m. at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Scoggins, born April 7, 1926, to the late Maggie Olive Nelson Pierce and the late Haywood Floyd Hubbard was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adelle Scoggins and one grandchild Paun Belinda Scoggins.

Survivors include: one daughter, Christine Scoggins Howe of Grenada; three sons, Roderick Adelle Scoggins  and Michael Byran Scoggins, both of Pope and Paul Martin Scoggins of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill Cemetery, 1924 Pope-Water Valley Rd., Pope, Miss. 38658.

Byron E. Murphree

BATESVILLE- Byron Eugene “Gene” Murphree, 74, died Thursday, September 4, 2008, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.

Services were Sunday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Gardens in Clarksdale. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Murphee, born Sept. 26, 1933, in Walnut, to the late Byron Morgan and Lucille Taylor Murphree, was a member of Walnut Baptist Church. He was a retired Bell South Manager and served in the United States Air Force.

Survivors include: his wife, Billie Jane Murphree of Batesville; one daughter, Lynda Gail Hester and husband, Mike of Tupelo; two sons, Tom Murphree and wife, Debbie of Alabaster, Ala. and Mark Murphree and wife, Teresa of Saltillo; one brother, Glenn T. Murphree and wife Pat of Pontotoc; one grandson, Nathan Murphree Hester; two step-grandsons; one step-granddaughter and five step-great-grandchildren.
