James Henry Armstrong Jr.

GLEN–James Henry Armstrong Jr., 45, formerly of Batesville, died Friday, August 15, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East in Memphis.

Services were Sunday at Magnolia Funeral Home in Corinth. Burial was in Henry Cemetery in Corinth. Magnolia Funeral Home had charge.

Henry, born to Ruthie A. Reed Armstrong Skeen of Batesville and the late James Henry Armstrong Sr., was a Baptist and a welder.

He was preceded in death by his step-father, John D. Skeen; grandfathers, Henry Armstrong and Charlie B. Reed and his grandmothers, Velma Armstrong and Mary Ruth Reed.

Survivors along with his mother include: his wife, Cindy L. Armstrong of Corinth;  two sons, James Marshall Armstrong and Justin L. Armstrong, both of Corinth; two step-sons, Jessie A. Kyle and Scotty J. Kyle, both of Corinth; one step-daughter, Anbergale S. Kyle Armstrong of Corinth; two brothers, Bobby G. Armstrong and Charlie W. Armstrong, both of Batesville; one step-brother, Keith Skeen of Batesville and two sisters, Cathy A. Bishop and husband, John and Brenda J. Walsch and husband B.J., all of Batesville; four nephews, Brandon Hill, John R. Bishop III, Charlie W. Armstrong Jr. and wife C.J., Cotey N. Dahl and two nieces, Amanda L. Bishop and Courtney M. Walsch.


Lt. Donald “Donnie” Clayton Carwile

1LT Donald “Donnie” Clayton Carwile, 29, Army Infantry Officer, died August 15, 2008 in Afghanistan.He was a former officer with the Batesville Police Department.

 Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at North Oxford Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Hope and Rev. Jerry East officiating.  Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be held today 4 p.m – 8 p.m. at North Oxford Baptist Church. Waller Funeral Home has charge.

Lt. Carwile served as a platoon leader in the United States Army and was actively serving in Operation Enduring Freedom, 101st Airborne (AASLT).

 He was a graduate of Lafayette High School and the University of Mississippi where he received a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice.  He was a graduate of MS Law Enforcement Training Academy and went on to serve as a Patrol Officer for both Batesville and Oxford Police Departments.

He later graduated and received his Army commission from Officer Candidate School (OCS).  During his military career, he earned the following awards: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal-Afghanistan.

In addition to his many awards, Lt. Carwile earned the coveted Combat Infantryman Badge, Airborne Badge and Air Assault Badge.  He is also a graduate of the US Army Infantry Officer Basic Course, Basic Officer Leadership Course, Mechanized Infantry Leaders Course and the Malaysian Tracker School.  

Donnie also enjoyed hunting and was an avid runner.

Survivors include: his wife, Jennifer Gail Carwile of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; two daughters, Elizabeth Reese Carwile and Avery Claire Carwile of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; his father, Dennis Ray Carwile and his wife, Judy, of Abbeville; his mother, Betina Ann Brigance Henne of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Misty Morningstar of Coleman, Fla. and Hailey Boggs of Oxford and a half brother, Joshua Jones Carwile of Texas.


Dorothy Faye Donahou

SARDIS–Dorothy Faye Donahou, 76, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at her residence.

Graveside services were Thursday at Union Baptist Cemetery. Rev. Jim Scruggs and Rev. Marvin Chism officiated. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Donahou, born April 22, 1932, in Blanchard, Okla., to the late Ernest and Bertha Cogburn Scribner, was a member of United Pentecostal Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include: her husband, Charles Donahou of Sardis; two daughters, Glenda Donahou of Baton Rouge, La. and Regina Donahou Hall of Ragley, La.; five sons, Bud Donahou and Robert Donahou, both of Senatobia, Edward Donahou, Richard Donahou and Denver Donahou, all of Sardis; three sisters, Mickey Studebaker of Swayzee, Ind., Ruth Perkins and Melba Harris, both of Coleman, Okla.; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.


Erna T. Duran

POPE–Erna T. Duran, 77, died Monday, August 18, 2008, in her daughter’s home in Charleston.

Memorial services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. John Hess will officiate. Visitation is Saturday 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Duran, born June 6, 1931, to the late Eduard and Luise Albrecht Tiede in Germany, was a member of New Apostolic Church in Tula.

Survivors include: two daughters, Yvonne Porter of Charleston and Marianne Swilley of Pineville, La.; one brother, Arthur Tiede of Australia; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Will A. Hickman

Will A. Hickman, 84, father of Jenny Poole of Batesville, died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi.  Services for the retired attorney will be Sunday, August 24 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.  

Visitation will be Saturday, August 23 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall and Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

 Born in Winnsboro, La. on August 27, 1923, he grew up in Monticello, and attended Hinds Junior College and Millsaps College. He served in Army in the Italian Theater in World War II.  He received his law degree from Ole Miss in 1949 and began practicing law in his adopted hometown of Oxford.  He was the senior partner of Hickman, Goza and Spragins Law Firm.

 At First Presbyterian Church he has served as Ruling Elder, Deacon, President of the Men of Church and Sunday School teacher.

During his legal career he served as Board Attorney for the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors, Oxford Separate School District, Oxford-Lafayette County Hospital, and Northeast Mississippi Electric Power Association.

 He served as president Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce and of the North Mississippi Industrial Foundation. He was a former Oxford alderman and served on the state Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dewey Cobb Hickman; three daughters, Debbie Little of Oxford, Jenny Poole of Batesville and Lisa Spragins of Oxford; one brother, James L. Hickman of Sun City, Arizona, and seven grandchildren


Kenric Terrance Hughes

BATESVILLE–Kenric Terrance Hughes, 29, died Sunday, August 17, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services  are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Antioch M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Reginald Reed will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Hughes, born Sept. 1, 1978, to Bobby Haze Clark and Bobby Faye Hughes, both of Batesville, was a member of Antioch M.B. Church.

Survivors along with his parents include: his grandmother, Louanna Huges of Batesville; four sons, Terion Hughes, Jamarion Frost, Te’Ron Walton and Nytravious Hughes, all of Batesville; four daughters, Kendria Lee, La’Kendra Hughes, TerKevia Hughes and ShaKeivos Smith, all of Batesville; six brothers, Kendrick Hughes, Courtney Hughes, Drexel Hughes, Brondrecus Clark and Bronderius Clark, all of Batesville and Antiono Childs of Memphis.


Robert “Bud” Lee

COURTLAND–Robert “Bud” Lee, 82, died Friday, August 15, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were Thursday at Shiloh M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Nehemiah Martin officiated. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Lee, born Sept. 7, 1925, in Batesville, to the late William “Buster” Lee and the late Molly Lee, was a member of Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Enid. He was a retired factory worker and farmer.

Survivors include: his wife, Ada Mae Lee of Courtland; seven daughters, Bishop Sarah Martin, Cassandra Lee, Pamela McMillian, all of Courtland, Bonny Sanford of Pope, Gloria Jean Lee of Charleston, Brenda Brown of Batesville and Teresa Jenkins of Blytheville, Ark.; three sons, Robert Lee Jr. of Courtland, Curtis Lee of Jackson and James Lee of Sardis; one brother, Foster Lee of Denton, Texas; 37 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Elizabeth Brooks Griffin

JACKSON–Elizabeth Brooks Griffin, 77, died August 16 at St. Catherine’s Village. She was the cousin of Georgia Seale and Jane Seale of Batesville. Mrs. Griffin was the daughter of the late William Gilbert and Jane Figg Echles, both originally from Panola County.

She was born in Jackson and was a graduate of the University of Mississippi.

Services were held on August 16 at First Baptist Church in Jackson, where she was a member.

Mrs. Griffin is survived by her sons Dr. James Brooks Griffin of Ridgeland and William Curtis Griffin of Jackson, and her daughters Dr. Betty Griffin-Feezor of Wilmington, N.C., and Carol Griffin Carnell of Germantown, Tenn.; her sister Mary Jane Henley of Jackson; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.


William Barney Murphree

POPE–William Barney Murphree, 81, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Robert Rawson will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Visitation is today 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Murphree, born Dec. 5, 1926, in Oakland, Ala., to the late William Leland and Bessie Hall Murphree, was a member of Batesville Church of Christ and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a retired manager.

Survivors include: his wife, Peggy Lipe Murphree of Pope; two sons, William L. Murphree of Bowling Green, Ky. and Joe D. Murphree of Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Sarah Jean Murphree Meredith of Park City, Mo.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
