William Powell Atkinson, 45, died at his home in Oxford on Nov. 28, 2018.  A private family memorial gathering was held Saturday, Dec. 1.

Well Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

 

Thomas Earl Burkley, 73, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018,  at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. Thomas was the husband of Bonnie Burkley of Batesville.

Funeral services for Mr. Burkley were held at 2p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home in Batesville with visitation beginning at 1 p.m.  prior to the service. Interment was at Liberty Hill Cemetery. Rev. Derrick Simmons officiated.

Tommy was born Jan. 10, 1945, to the late William Burkley and Louise Sullivant Burkley in Charleston. In the 1960’s, Tommy worked for the U.S. Forest Service putting out forest fires in Idaho.

He loved passing time with others telling stories of those days. Tommy loved trout fishing in Montana, Tennessee, and North Carolina. His favorite past times were spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Tommy was retired from Fred’s Inc. where he was Sr. VP of Advertising.

He was an active member of New Beginnings Community Church in Batesville.

The loving family he leaves behind includes his wife of 53 years, Bonnie Nell Whitten Burkley of Batesville;  two children, Tammy Burkley Lance of Batesville, and Jeff Burkley of Bozeman, MT.; four  grandchildren, Issac Barnett, Seth Barnett, Mark Lance, and Whitten Burkley; three great-grandchildren, Nolan Barnett, Logan Barnett, and Waylon Barnett.

In addition to his parents, Thomas is preceded in death by one brother, William Burkley.

Memorial contributions in Tommy’s honor may be made to New Beginnings Community Church, 2096 Nelson Spur Rd. Pope, MS 38658.

 

Billie Gene “Fish Lady” McCarty, 88, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, at her home near Sardis.

Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 3, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with interment in Union Cemetery in Sardis. The family received friends Monday afternoon prior to the service.

Billie was born Nov. 25, 1930, to the late James William “J.W.” and Jewel Bell Green. She was a retired factory worker, but most will remember her as a commercial fisherman who provided many people in the community with fish to eat.

 

Nora Warren, 95, died at her home Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018, in Courtland. There is no service scheduled at this time.

Wells Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

 

Mary Elizabeth Wright, 28, died Friday, Nov.30, 2018, at her home in Courtland.

The family received friends for visitation Saturday evening at Wells Funeral Home in Batesville.

Elizabeth was born June 23, 1990, to Tony Wayne Wright and Mary Kathryn Brewer Wright in Clarksdale.
