John Edwin Boyd Jr.
SLEDGE–John Edwin Boyd Jr., 87, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Northwest Regional Medical Center.
Services are today at 10 a.m. at Sledge United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home has charge.
Boyd, born Dec. 10, 1920, was a member of Sledge United Methodist Church. He was in the U.S. Army Corps during WWII and a navigator on a B-24.
He was retired from Farm Bureau Insurance.
Survivors include: his wife, Louise Howze Boyd of Sledge; two sons, John Boyd III of Como and Don Boyd of Rosemark, Tenn. and one granddaughter.
Memorials may be made to Sledge Baptist Church or Hollywood Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
Robert Neil Goshorn
SARDIS–Robert Neil Goshorn, 92, died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Primacy Healthcare.
Services were Saturday at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.
Goshorn, born March 13, 1916, to the late Mary Rosalee Dugger and the late James Oliver Goshorn Sr., attended Texas A & M after graduation and later Mississippi State University.
He was a member of the Sardis Presbyterian Church where he served as both a deacon and elder. He was a WWII Army veteran having served in the Pacific from 1942 until March 1945. He retired in 1984 from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural route carrier. He farmed outside of Sardis where he kept horses.
Survivors include: his wife of 66 years, Bernie Goshorn; two daughters, Laurie Mitchell of Memphis and Meg Woods of Sardis; one son, Neumon Goshorn of Memphis; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family requests that memorials made to the Sardis Presbyterian Church.
Lucius Bernard Phelps
COURTLAND–Lucius Bernard Phelps, 87, died Monday, June 16, 2008, at his residence.
Services are Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors. Rev. Fred Pearrow and Rev. Billy Criddle will officiate. Visitation will be today 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Phelps, born Feb. 14, 1921, in Panola County, to the late Edward Lawrence Phelps and the late Stella Smith Phelps, graduated from Black Jack High School, Mississippi State University and Naval Officers’ Training School at Notre Dame University. He served with the seventh Fleet Amphibious Unit in Pacific in World War II as the ship’s engineer and supply officer. He was a member of Gideon’s International, a lay speaker, and school teacher. He was a member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church, where he served as a teacher and a deacon for 55 years. He had retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier and from farming.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis Phelps and Audley “Jake” Phelps and one great-grandson, Davy Bryant.
Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Martha McCown Phelps of Courtland; one son, Donald Bernard Phelps and wife, Angie of Courtland; three daughters, Teresa Wright and husband Willis of Batesville, Martha Lynn Bowles and husband, Dean of Courtland and Annette McMahan of Batesville; one sister, Faye Carvan and husband, Homer of Enid; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family asks that memorials be sent to Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church Education Building Fund, 470 Pilgrims Rest Road, Batesville or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Patsy Oneta Crow Ray
MARKS–Patsy Oneta Crow Ray, 77, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Quitman County Nursing Home.
Services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Kimbro Funeral Home. Don O’Quin and John Shackleford will officiate. Burial will be in Lambert Cemetery. Visitation is today 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Kimbro Funeral Home. Kimbro Funeral Home has charge.
Ray, born in Oakland, Nov. 10, 1930, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lambert and the Quitman County Nursing Home Quick Stitchers. She was a retired factory worker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Ray and one daughter, Barbara Ann Ray.
Survivors include: three sons, Elbert Ray of Courtland, Eddie Ray of Sardis and Jeff Ray of Marks; two daughters, Judy Moyer of Stuttgart, Ark. and Janie Killough of Monticello, Ark.; one brother, Charles Crow of Savannah, Tenn.; three sisters, Mabel Austin of Baytown, Texas, Janie Brewster of Tutwiler and Yvonne Williams of Cedar Hill, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Cora Mae Vaxter
BATESVILLE–Cora Mae Vaxter, 73, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at her residence.
Memorial services were Friday at New Enon M.B. Church in Batesville. Rev. Robert Vaughn officiated. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Oxford had charge.
Vaxter was a retired cafeteria supervisor at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi. She was a member of New Enon M.B. Church.
She was preceded in death by one son, Don Vaxter.
Survivors include: three daughters, Jeanette Jones of Cordova, Tenn., Eurlene Patton of Memphis and Barbara Humphrey of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; one son, Robert Kevin Vaxter of Florence; two sisters, Mamie Kinnard and Flordia Hemphill, all of Memphis; two brothers, Elmer “Mickey” Fox and Kenneth Fox, all of Oxford; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
