Before a brief two year stint with Tennessee, the former 13-year NFL veteran spent three seasons at Mississippi State as cornerbacks coach. Townsend began his coaching career in 2011 with the Arizona Cardinals where he stayed for two years before going to Starkville.
Townsend quarterbacked the South Panola football team to its first ever state championship in 1993.
Following high school, he made his mark at the University of Alabama where he was drafted by the Steelers in 1998. He spent 12 years with the Steelers and won two Super Bowl rings.
His final season as a player was with the Indianapolis Colts.
