North Delta took a 44-6 homecoming win over Coldwater
By Will Dickins
Anne Jordan Gentry was not the only winner on homecoming night Friday as the North Delta Green Wave football team took care of the Cougars of Coldwater 44-6.
North Delta continued their winning ways due in part to a big night from the defense. In fact, the six points Coldwater scratched across came in the last play of the game. In the first quarter, the Green Wave started their dominance forcing four 4-and-outs and only giving up minus 45 rushing yards and 10 passing yards.
Coldwater ended their drives with a one yard punt, a fake punt from their own 25 yard line, an almost safety on a bad snap, and finally a punt.
The Green Wave offense was gifted short field position for most of the quarter which made it easy to score. The first came from seven yards out when Cole Devazier hit Harris Cole for the touchdown grab and J. T. Stennet rumbled in for the two point conversion in his first game back.
Two drives later, they found themselves starting on the Cougar one yard line. Kaleb Joyner walked in for another touchdown on his touchdown total for the year. A few short minutes later they had the ball again.
It was first down with ten yards to go for the first down. Devazier got the call for a screen pass. He took the snap, looked right, and saw a host of Cougars around the receiver. Harris Cole broke off his route and went up field allowing Devazier to hit him in stride for the 25-yard touchdown, just how they drew it up.
For Coldwater, when it rains it pours. They found themselves in trouble losing the ball on fumbles to end their first two drives. Braxton Bailey was the Green Wave player who pounced on both fumbles. The Cougars had minus eight total yards in the second quarter.
North Delta’s offense seized the opportunity once again turning turnovers into points with two Joyner runs from 13 and 14 yards out.
Joyner continued to show he has a nose for the end zone and can be relied upon near the goal line.
At halftime, North Delta led 36-0 in a game that was never truly close. The Green Wave scored its last touchdown of the game in the third quarter. Brandon Henson got his turn to tote the football, finding pay dirt from four yards out to cap the longest drive of the game, which started from North Delta 49.
The defensive performance never slowed down as the game bled in to the fourth quarter with the Green Wave leading 44-0.
Brayden Locke received valuable experience Friday night on both sides. He had multiple runs for 24 yards. He also produced one of the better highlights of the game when he intercepted at the 50 and scooted his way down to the 25.
The last highlight of the game came from Coldwater as time expired on fourth and 18. The quarterback took the snap, flung the ball to his receiver who ran 98 yards for the score.
Nevertheless, North Delta won the game easily 44-6 on a homecoming night and now look ahead to Friday’s game against Macon Road for its second away game at 7 p.m.
