ND Pee Wee debuts
By Angie Ledbetter
It was an exciting time at Green Wave field on Tuesday night when the Green Wave pee wee football team of 31 players took the field.
The Green Wave hosted the Marvell Eagles from Marvell, Ark. The Eagles were out numbered by 20 players and also outsized.
Both teams played their best for the exciting crowd of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, teachers, junior high football players and varsity football players.
Also cheering the players on were the 2007 Pee Wee cheerleaders, from grades fourth through sixth, coached by Gracie Wilson. They performed a halftime dance and cheer for the fans.
Head coach David Hardy had his young team ready with the fundamentals and basics of football like where to stand for the prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance and to stay behind the white line and in the block.
The game consisted of four short quarters with no kicking or punting. It was scoreless until the fourth quarter. With 3:22 left in the game, Hunter Baker intercepted the ball for the Green Wave team. On the next play, Baker scored the first points of the night. The two point conversion failed. The Green Wave team led 6-0.
The young Green Wave defense stood its ground stopping the Marvell Eagles offense. They hit hard and they tackled everything they could. It did not matter that the refs threw a few flags.
With even seconds left in the game, Tyler Beard, recovered a Marvell fumble and took the ball into the endzone for another Green Wave touchdown. The 2 point conversion failed again. The Green Wave Pee Wee team shut out the Eagles 12-0 for season opener.
The Green Wave Pee Wee team will be back in action next Tuesday night when they travel to Senatobia to take on the Magnolia Heights Chiefs Pee Wee team at 6 p.m.
