POPE–Gussie Lee Hentz, 88, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Our Lady of Resurrection Hospital in Chicago.

Services are today at 1 p.m. at Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Pope. Rev. William C. Bailey  will officiate. Burial will be in Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery. Visitation will be noon – 1 p.m. today at Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Hentz, born May 27, 1919, in Pope, to the late Cleveland Johnson and the late Lucy Price Johnson, was a homemaker and a member of Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Pope. She was an usher, member of the Pastor’s Aide Club and a conference worker for the Missionary Society.

Survivors include: three daughters, Shirley Hentz Hardin of Como, Essie Richardson of Chicago and Gloria Jean Shegog of Pope; five sons, Bobby Ray Hentz of Courtland, Jerry Hentz of Sardis, Jessie Hentz, C.W. Hentz and Woodrow Hentz, all of Chicago; 55 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren; a host of great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.

OXFORD–Charles Travis Jamison, 19, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, in Johnson County, Kan. He was the nephew of Howard Jamison of Batesville.

Memorial services were Friday at Coleman Funeral Home Chapel. Coleman Funeral Home had charge.

Jamison, born to Willie Roy Jamison and Lottie L. Jamison, both of Oxford, attended Lafayette High School. He was a Boy Scout and attended Cypress Grove M.B. Church.

Survivors along with his parents include: one sister, Mary Massey of Hickory Flat; and his  grandfather, S.T. Jamison Sr. of Oxford.

SARDIS–Bobby Gene McCullar, 54, died Monday, July 2, 2007, at his residence.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

McCullar was born Feb. 21, 1953, in Water Valley, to Shirley Reaves and Silvia Quay Langham McCullar.

Survivors along with his parents include: his wife, Mildred Ann Carlisle McCullar of Sardis; three daughters, Lisa Michelle McCullar Hall of Como Teresa Lynn McCullar Robbins of Sardis and Kandi Leigh McCullar Gironlegardo of Hernando; four sisters, Joann McCullar Vandergriff of Carlsbad, N.M., Gail McCullar Fly of Water Valley, Dianne McCullar Cadena of Batesville and Patricia McCullar Sims of Water Valley; his twin brother, Billy Dean McCullar of Courtland and seven grandchildren.

Former Batesville resident Mamye Barksdale Felder Shackelford, 91, died Tuesday, July 3 at Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange, Ga.

She was the widow of the late Dr. Walter Malcolm Shackelford who was superintendent of the Batesville Separate School District from 1950 until consolidation in 1957. Their departure from Batesville was noted in a “farewell” editorial.

“Mayme and Malcolm Shackelford have been the best of ‘good neighbors’ to the many families who have resided in their neighborhood,” the editor wrote in The Panolian published July 11, 1957.

“Their yard has been almost a public place where children of every age could find recreation and companionship. A youngsters’ poll would tell with accuracy that more Batesville children are familiar with the Shackelford kitchen than possibly any other kitchen in town.”

Mrs. Shackelford was born April 19, 1916, in Magnolia to Vernon Y. and Mamye Barksdale Felder. She had lived in LaGrange for the past 49 years where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was employed as a high school teacher of algebra and biology and a counselor.

A 1936 graduate of Milsaps College, Mrs. Shackelford returned to school and received her master’s degree from Auburn University in 1967. She was a member of the Round Table, Mary Will Thompson Sunday School Class, Colonial Dames and First Families of Mississippi.

Survivors include four children, Walter M. Shackelford and his wife, Bonnie, of Raleigh, N.C.; Jennie Gonzales and her husband, John, of Tucson, Ariz; Dale Halstead and her husband, Roger, of Tucson; and Elizabeth Shackelford of LaGrange; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held July 7 at the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange.

LAMBERT–Louie E. Walls, 66, died Thursday, July 12, 2007, at his residence.

Services were Saturday at Kimbro Funeral Home. Rev. Larry Kilgore officiated. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Walls born, Sept. 4, 1940, was a retired farmer.

Survivors include: his wife, Sadie Walls of Lambert; four daughters, Teresa Krohn of Batesville, Linda Adams of Nashville, Tenn., Jeanie Lutts of Memphis and Marsha Walls of Moon Lake; four sisters, Tina Cooper, Mary Ann Thompson and Carol Martin, all of Batesville and Lois Fortner of Tocowa; three brothers, Ed Walls, Bennett Walls, both of Marks and Thomas Walls of Batesville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
