Dale’s closing, Perry’s gears up |
| Dale’s Smokehouse Cafe will close its doors Saturday at 4 p.m. to make way for development at the Highway 6 and 51 intersection site where Cheryl and Kirby Bishop have operated their restaurant since September, 2000.
"I’m looking; I’m open; I’m going to rest a little bit," Cheryl Bishop said Wednesday. "They’re swarming me," she added, referring to a crush of diners who have rallied to the restaurant to make sure they enjoy one more experience of the Bishop’s menu.
Meanwhile, Mike and Kay Perry at Perry’s Restaurant at the Highway 6 and Eureka Street intersection are gearing up to fill the dining void left by Dale’s closing. Starting Monday, Perry’s will open seven days a week, starting at 5 a.m., Mike Perry said.
Perry’s has also hired a number of Dale’s soon-to-be former staff members, including Alice Roberson, Mary Daniels, Debra Williams, Shirley Moore, Janise Roy, Cindy Darby, Heather Hentz and Candy Sharp to meet his new extended schedule, according to an annoucement in this edition.
The early morning opening will allow Perry to serve breakfast customers and will be offered daily. The restaurant will offer a lunch plate as well as menu service. Weekday dinners will include an extensive selection of cooked vegetables, Perry said. On Friday and Saturday nights, Perry will continue his popular seafood buffett, and on Sundays he will offer an after-church buffet.
And in another development in the fast-changing Batesville restaurant scene, Wally Pang has hung a "for sale" in the window of his Wally’s Hong Kong Restaurant. |

| Calendar pictures historic Panola church buildings |

| Batesville Mayor Jerry Autrey purchases a calendar picturing historic Panola County churches from Judy Russell (right) and Donna Traywick. Both women are members of the Panola County Cancer Relief group which published the calendar as a fund-raiser. Fifteen historic churches are featured in this year’s project. A colorful picture calendar featuring photos of 15 historic Panola churches is being sold as a fund-raiser by the Panola County Cancer Relief Organization.
"I took the photos in the hot summertime," laughed Judy Russell, a member of the organization who coordinated the calendar project. "We plan to make this an annual project and get different churches each year."
Shown in this year’s calendar are: Pope Chapel A.M.E. Zion, Cold Springs United Methodist, Terza United Methodist, Eureka A.M.E. Zion, Chapel Hill United Methodist, Peach Creek Baptist, Pleasant Green M.B., Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist, St. Peter M.B., Freedonia United Methodist, Black Jack United Presbyterian, Pisgah United Methodist, Eureka United Methodist, Mt. Olivet United Methodist and Shady Grove Baptist.
The calendars cost $10 each and may be purchased from any Cancer Relief Organization member, including secretary Judy Russell, who can be reached at 934-0057.
Others who worked on the project include Red Hudson, president of the organization; Kathryn Hyde, vice president; Marie Leland, Donna Traywick and Leigh Ann Cannon.
Money raised by the group stays in Panola County to help local cancer patients, according to Russell. She encouraged patients who need help to get in touch with the organization. |
