MARKET, Dallas
POPE – Dallas Market, 92, died Sunday, February 4, 2007, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Services were Thursday at Shiloh M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. C.J. Battle officiated. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.
Market, born Sept. 12, 1914, in Pope, to the late Andrew Market and the late Martha Market, was a farmer and a member of New Bethlehem M.B. Church.
Survivors include: five daughters, Emma Benson of Pope, Martha Lou Market, Glady Market Ellis, Pauline Key, all of Batesville and Mary Pugh of Milwaukee, Wis.; his granddaughter who cared for him, Emma "Lucille" Ellis, of Pope; eight sons, Earl Market Jr. of Oxford, Luther Guy Taylor and James Earl Market, both of Courtland, Larry Market, Robert Lee Market, Lee Andrew Market and Steve Market, all of Batesville and Billy Ray Market of Memphis; 75 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren.
MARTIN, Brenda B.
RICHMOND, VA. – Brenda B. Martin, 58, wife of Batesville native George W. "Beanie" Martin, died January 30 after a brief illness.
A native of Cleveland, Mrs. Martin was the daughter of the late Swinton and Eva Bell. She was a graduate of Cleveland High School and was a homemaker.
Memorial services were held February 2 at Huguenot Road Baptist Church.
Mrs. Martin is survived by three daughters, Monica Andrzejewski, M. Renee Seay and Megan Martin, all of Richmond, and by her brother Bubba Bell of Cleveland.
She was the daughter-in-law of George and Mittie Martin of Batesville, and the sister-in-law of Mike Martin and Betty Horton, also of Batesville.
McCLENDON, Emma Jean Gumbus
DARLING – Emma Jean Gumbus McClendon, 63, died Saturday, December 30, 2007, at Dallas Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She was the the mother of Catrina McClendon Curry of Batesville.
Services were Thursday at Oakcliff Bible Fellowship Church and will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Quitman County Elementary School in Lambert. Burial will be in Squirrel Lake Cemetery in Darling. Eddie Robinson Funeral Directors has charge.
McClendon, born Feb. 20, 1943, in Darling, to the late Ananias Gumbus Sr. and Hattie B. Gumbus, was a teacher for over 40 years in Quitman County Schools, Arkansas and Texas. She graduated from Mississippi Valley State College.
Survivors along with her mother and daughter include: her daughter, Sherrilyn McClendon of Senatobia; one brother, Ananias Gumbus Jr. and wife Lillie Mae of Memphis; four grandchildren, Brittney Niter, Christopher McClendon, Tomichella Curry, all of Batesville and Brandon McClendon of Senatobia; one great-grandchild, Javari Smith Jr. of Batesville.
McMAHAN, Richard Holcombe "Rick"
BATESVILLE – Richard Holcombe "Rick" McMahan, 57, died Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at his residence.
Services are today at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Dr. Greg Johnston will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
McMahan, born July 29, 1949, in Memphis, to the late Mary Kathryn Holcombe McMahan and the late David McMahan Jr., was a member of the First Baptist Church and a business man.
He was a member and past President of the Batesville Rotary Club. He also was a member of the Civitan Club of Batesville. Rick served on the Board of Directors for J.P. Hudson Park Commission which later became J.C. Dunlap Memorial Complex/J.P. Hudson Park McMahan Field.
During his career with McMahan Distributing Company, he earned the coveted "Paul Garber Award for Excellence." In January 1994 he was presented this honor which was given in recognition of his outstanding growth achievements in his Slush Puppie business.
Rick was an avid supporter of North Delta Sports. He served as a Booster Club member and past president of the club. He spearheaded the renovation of the school’s football field in 2001.
Survivors include: his wife, Annette Phelps McMahan of Batesville; two sons, Richard Phelps McMahan of Hattiesburg and Chad Holcombe McMahan of Batesville; two brothers, William David McMahan of Clarksdale and Michael Lee McMahan of Jackson, Tenn.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the A.L.S. Association.
McMILLAN, Robert Sr.
BATESVILLE – Robert McMillan Sr., 83, died Sunday, January 21, 2007, at his residence.
Services are Saturday at 1 p.m. at West Camp M.B. Church. Rev. Melvin Jones will officiate. Burial will be in West Camp Cemetery. Visitation is today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
McMillan, born July 2, 1923, to the late James McMillan and the late Emma Dugger, was a retired laborer and a member of West Camp M.B. Church where he was a deacon. He was a member of the Panola Lodge No. 6-A and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include: three daughters, Joann McMillan, Debra McMillan and Shirlee Hicks, all of Batesville; three sons, Charles McMillan, Robert McMillan Jr. and Willie McMillan, all of Batesville; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
McNATT, Boyd
ELLIOT – Boyd McNatt, 63, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at Methodist University Hospital. He was the brother of William McNatt of Batesville.
Services were Saturday at National Funeral Home Chapel in Grenada. Burial was in Old Union Cemetery in Carroll County. National Funeral Home had charge.
McNatt was a Baptist and retired surveyor’s assistant for Willis Engineering in Grenada.
Survivors along with his brother include: two brothers, James McNatt of Water Valley and Charles McNatt of Grenada.
MEEK, Thomas Woodard "Woody" Sr.
COURTLAND – Thomas Woodard "Woody" Meek Sr., 80, died Sunday, January 28, 2007, at his residence.
Services are Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Visitation is today 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home with a Rosary service at 6 p.m. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Woodard, born May 4, 1926, to the late Lester C. and Mary Ileen Davis Meek, was a retired superintendent for Columbia Gulf Transmissions of Houston, Texas. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eris Daniel Meek.
Survivors include: one son, Thomas W. Meek Jr. of Austin, Texas; one step-daughter, Jere Card Roy of Courtland; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
MILAM, Roger William "Bill"
CORINTH – Roger William "Bill" Milam, 50, formerly of Batesville, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at his residence.
Services were Friday at Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. Bro. Jimmy Daniels officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Magnolia Funeral Home had charge.
Milam, born Oct. 19, 1956, was a member of Oakland Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert Onkst and Graham Milam and Ethel Milam.
Survivors include: his wife, Vickie Milam of Corinth; his parents, R.L. and Jean Milam of Batesville; four sons, Tyler Milam and Taylor Milam, Jason Parker and Jamie Parker, all of Corinth; two daughters, Heather Barbee of Oxford and Ashley Allen of Horn Lake; two brothers, Dave Milam of Southaven and Mark Milam of Batesville; one sister, Janice Mangimelli and husband D.C. of Atlanta, Ga.; his grandmother, Katherine Onkst of Batesville and six grandchildren.
MILLER, Carl Edward Sr.
TUNICA – Carl Edward Miller Sr., 76, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at his residence.
Services were Saturday at Tunica Church of Christ. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sardis. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
Miller, born July 19, 1930, in Pontotoc to the late Robert Hugh and Lagatha Brown Miller, was a member of Tunica Church of Christ and a retired auto mechanic and auto body repairmen.
Survivors include: his wife, Emma "Inez" Woodall Miller of Tunica; one daughter, Betty Miller Traywick; three sons, Herbert Joe Miller of Omaha, Ark., Robert Dale Miller of Holister, Mo. and Carl Edward Miller Jr. of Tunica; four sisters, Bernice Miller Jones of Amory, Heloise Miller Perkins of Sardis, Faye Miller Cook of Nettleton and Shirley Miller Pounders of Hamilton; two brothers, Billy Hugh Miller of Grenada and George Andrew Miller of Pearl; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
MILLER, Lyles Vern
CROWDER – Lyles Vern Miller, 67, died Friday, February 9, 2007, at his residence.
Services were Sunday at Crowder Assemble of God Church. Rev. Murphy Eubanks and Rev. Bob Hickey officiated. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.
Miller, born Aug. 2, 1939, to the late S.T. Miller and the late Dorothy Louise Cooper Miller, was a retired Mississippi Highway State Trooper. He was a Mississippi State Trooper from 1973 – 1998. He was also a member of Crowder Assemble of God Church and a veteran of the United States Air Force from 1957-1960. He was also a member of the Mississippi State Troopers Association.
Survivors include: his mother, Louise Miller of Crowder; his wife, Patsy Ann Miller of Crowder; one daughter, Donna Carol Miller of Crowder; one son, Jimmy Miller of Pleasant Grove; one sister, Helen Schneider of Dallas, Texas and brother, Edward M. Miller of Crowder; three step sons, Barry Ott of Clarksdale; Tim Ott of Batesville and Jeff Ott of Lake Comorant and seven grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Mississippi State Trooper Association.
MILLS, Mary Lorene Farris
LAMBERT – Mary Lorene Farris Mills, 88, died Sunday, January 21, 2007, at Baptist Hospital North Mississippi.
Services were Wednesday at Blue Lake Baptist Church. Rev. Bobby Holland officiated. Burial was in Lambert Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.
Mills, born Nov. 14, 1918, was a member of Blue Lake Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, D.J. Mills, one son, David Mills and one daughter, Hazel Cornelison.
Survivors include: three sons, Charles Mills and Larry Mills, both of Oakland and Jimmy Mills of Lambert; two daughters, Martha McCullar and Glenda Cosby, both of Batesville; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

MIZE, Howard E.
BATESVILLE – Howard E. Mize, 86, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Services are today at 10 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. David Freeman will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Mize, born Sept. 17, 1920, in Oxford, to the late Curt C. and Virginia Sartor Mize, attended and graduated from the Yocona High School.
He was a member of the Batesville Presbyterian Church, a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy, a former partner of The Panolian and former owner of Mize Hardware. He was a contributing member of the Mississippi Archaeology Society, a member of the Memphis Amateur Retriever Club and former Board member.
Survivors include: one brother, Bob Mize of Moss Point; two nieces, Debra Mize Matthews of Vancleave and Donna Mize Stampley of Natchez and nine nephews, David Mize and Duane Mize, both of Natchez, Jerry Mize of Oxford, Martin Garner of Blue Springs, John Garner of Germantown, Tenn., Howard Garner of Tupelo, William Garner of Oxford, Paul Garner of Woodland, Texas and Andrew Garner of Batesville.
MOORE, James Hal Sr.
POPE – James Hal Moore Sr., 88, died Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at North Mississippi Baptist Hospital in Oxford.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the South Panola Junior High School Auditorium. He will be buried with full military honors at the Pope Chapel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be today at the South Panola Junior High School Auditorium 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.
Moore, born Sept. 2, 1918, to the late Ming Henry Moore and the late Lessie Hubbard Moore, was a 1937 graduate of Pope High School and a 1941 graduate of Mississippi State University earning a degree in animal husbandry. He was a member of Pope United Methodist Church and was a WWII Navy veteran.
After college graduation, he enlisted as a Seaman Apprentice in the United States Navy in August of 1941. He completed Midship School and was commissioned as an Ensign. After promotion to Lieutenant he became the Commanding Officer aboard the USS Raccoon. Among his decorations is the Silver Star, awarded for gallantry in combat, and the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged in February 1946.
He returned to Pope after the war to begin his career as a row crop and cattle farmer. He was also the owner and operator of Moore’s Grocery and Farmer’s Feed and Supply Company for 22 years. He was named Panola County Cattleman of the Year, as well as Mississippi Cattleman of the Year.
He served in many advisory capacities including: Superintendent Pope United Methodist Church, the ASCS County Committee, the Yocona Gin Company Board of Directors, the Panola County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and United Southern Bank Board of Directors. He served as president of Northwest District Livestock Association for 20 years.
He was honored as the Batesville Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball King in 1999. He retired from South Panola School District Board of Trustees in December 2003 after 42 years of service.
Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, Mildred Hardy Moore; one son, James Hal Moore Jr. of Nesbit; four daughters, Jane Moore Hall and husband Harold of Greenville, S.C.; Margaret Moore Acosta and husband Tony of Winnfield, La., Carol Moore Bullard and husband Rickey of Pope and Arlene Moore Baker and husband Mike of Mt. Dora, Fla.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
MOORE, William Leslie "Bill"
SENATOBIA – William Leslie "Bill" Moore, 69, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at his residence.
Services are today at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Batesville. Rev. David Gossum, Doug Pepper and Jay Adkinson will officiate. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.
Moore, was a member of Lifepoint Baptist Church in Senatobia. He was retired from the Memphis Police Department as a Lt. after serving 26 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a Chief of Police for 14 years at the Northwest Community College in Senatobia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Campbell Moore Sr.
Survivors include: his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Potts Moore; his mother, Lorene Land Moore Musick and Walter of Batesville; two daughters, Vicki McDaniel and husband Rick of Batesville and Yolonda Ledgerwood and husband Todd of Millington, Tenn.; one son, Tim Wyatt and wife Angie of Southaven; three brothers, Walter C. "Sonny" Moore Jr. and wife Tait and Tommy Land Moore and wife Sissy of Batesville and Larry Dale Moore and wife Diane of Pontotoc; one sister, Patricia Massey and husband Sam of Walnut Ridge, Ark.; seven grandchildren, Samantha Newsom and husband Larry, Bubba Johnson, Melissa Johnson, Lauren Wyatt, Morgan Wyatt, Christian Ledgerwood and Caleigh Ledgerwood.

MORGAN, James E.
COURTLAND – James E. Morgan, 53, died Friday, December 29, 2006, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
Services were Wednesday at Johnson Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Courtland. Rev. Warren Johnson officiated. Burial was in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.
Morgan, born April 13, 1953, in Lambert to the late Lonzia Morgan and the late Annie Mae Durton Morgan, was a member of Johnson Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Courtland. He was also an Usher and trustee.
Survivors include: his wife, Margaret Morgan of Courtland; two daughters, Lukeither M. Bibbs and Calandra Morgan, both of Courtland, three sisters, Retha Morgan, Ruthie Ford, both of Batesville and Rosie Fox of Memphis; four brothers, Van Morgan, Rufus Morgan and James H. Morgan, all of Batesville and Jessie Orr of Sardis and two grandchildren.
MORRIS, Myles Roy
BATESVILLE – Myles Roy Morris, 69, died Friday, March 23, 2007, at his residence.

Morris, born Oct. 14, 1937, to the late Josh Morris Jr. and Florence Lawson Morris of Batesville, was a truck driver for Panola County Solid Waste Department and a member of Macedonia M.B. Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Hawk Motorcycle Club.
Survivors along with his mother include: his wife, Magnolia Morris of Batesville; one daughter, Vanessa Snerling of Chicago; one son, Larry Snerling of Chicago; one sister, Annie Mildred Cooper of St. Louis; one brother, John Clinton Morris of Memphis; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
MORRIS, Rep. Leonard
BATESVILLE – Rep. Leonard Morris, 59, died Friday, January 12, 2007, at University Hospital in Jackson.
Services are today at 2:30 p.m. at the Batesville Junior High School Auditorium. Pastor Edward Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery. Memorial services were also yesterday at Concord M.B. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Morris, born Sept. 15, 1947, was the youngest child of William M. and Azalee Houston Morris, accepted Christ in 1958 and united with the Concord Missionary Baptist Church where he has served in many ministries of the church which included being chairman of the deacon ministry.
He was committed to education at all levels, spiritual and secular. He maintained that commitment to education. He was a 1966 graduate of the Patton Lane High School, Northwest Mississippi Community College, University of Mississippi and the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute. He was a licensed real estate broker and realtor and a licensed appraiser.
He served as an elected member of the South Panola School Board for 15 years, president of the Mississippi School Board Association in which he served as secretary and treasurer, vice president and president. He was actively involved as a member of the Board of Trustees for SACs and served as president during the meager of SACs and the North Central Association.
As a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, he served on education, municipalities, constitution, ways and means, fees and salaries of elected officials, and chairman of Medicaid.
He firmly believed in one giving back to his or her community, and he did so by serving on a number of boards.
Survivors include: his wife, Belinda Faye; two daughters, Lenora Marie Morris of Memphis and Lillian Morris of Batesville; his brothers, Dewitt Morris, Walter and wife Carolyn Morris, of St. Louis; two sisters, Dorothy and husband James Rowsey of St. Louis, Mo. and Catherine M. Ferguson of Bronx, N.Y. and also a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been established at Covenant Bank, 1130 Hwy. 6 East, Batesville.
