Lady Cougars win some, lose some
By Donna Taylor

It was a busy week for the North Panola Lady Cougars. After an exciting win against the Coldwater Lady Cougars on December 2, the Team matched up against Madison S. Palmer, Tuesday, December 6 losing by a score of 50-45.

On December 9, they squared off against the Byhalia Lady Indians at North Panola. The Lady Indians won that contest 45-30. The Lady Cougars did not look like that well oiled machine that played so well against Coldwater, a Team that the Lady Indians have Defeated twice this Season.

The Lady Indians head coach Summer Pannell has been at the top position for four years. Their record presently stands at 9-5.

"It was a hard fought game," Pannell said.

Both Teams had a high rate of turnovers, but the Lady Indians held on to win the game.

The Lady Cougars appeared a bit sluggish throughout the game, amid screams from Coach Jocelyn Frost to "get in there and block out!" Byhalia was still able to get in on the base line and had Several put backs to increase their lead.

The big clock was still in need of maintenance and that confused some players about the time remaining in each quarter.

LaTorya Hill got the chance to show off some of her athletic skills. She was fouled Several times, some were non-shooting fouls, and ended the night with three points.

The high scorer for the night was Tanisha Williams, with 10 points.

"I don’t know what happened to us tonight," Williams said after the game."

Grenesha "Ne" Edwards, scored in double figures against Coldwater, but fell short in the Palmer and Byhalia games. Edwards scored only three points in the meeting with Byhalia.

She is also a majorette for the band and may have been a tad bit exhausted, performing in all the local Christmas parades and then having to switch gears and play basketball. She is still a player to watch once she gets her motor running.

Williams and Edwards Teamed up for a Textbook back door play in the third quarter, much to the fans Delight, to come within five points of the Lady Indians. It was not enough for them to pull out a win.

Other Lady Cougars scorers were Anterior Ballentine with two, Daphne Thomas, six; Coraka King, six. Their scoring by quarter was lagging from previous outings. They scored eight in the first quarter, six in both the Second and third quarters and 10 in the fourth.

Cougars
The Cougars are still looking for a win but fell to Lafayette County 54-46 Tuesday night.

Nicholas Black was the game’s high scorer with 17 points, followed by Roderick Jefferson with 10 points. Jason Roberson chipped in eight points for the Cougars.

Lafayette led 32-20 at halftime and throughout the game.

The Teams will be in Olive Branch tonight at 5 p.m. and will be in Holly Springs Tuesday night at 6 p.m. Then the Cougars will be on holiday break until January 3 when they return to district action in Independence.

Nelson comes off bench to lead Tigers
By Myra Bean

The South Panola Tiger basketball Team is 8-4 overall, 0-1 district after a "sluggish" win over Cleveland Tuesday night, according to Tiger head coach Charlie Howard.

The Tigers won 49-43 being led in points by Senior Anthony Nelson with 16.

Nelson has come off the bench in the last three games to be the points leader for the Tigers.

The Lady Tigers Defeated Desoto Central 45-39 in overtime.

The score was tied at 39 at the end of regulation. Lady Tiger Kim Sanford was the only scorer in overtime and she had two field goals and a free throw.

The two Teams went back at it in the Second half and the lady Tigers held a slight 25-22 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The tie came when the Lady Jaguars outscored the Lady Tigers 17-14 in the fourth quarter to force the extra time.

In the first district game of the Season against Horn Lake December 6, the Lady Tigers won 52-46.

Horn Lake led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers held them to four points in the Second quarter to cut the lead 21-19 at halftime.

South Panola turned up the heat in the Second half and outscored Horn Lake 33-25 for the win.

Townsend was the Team’s leading scorer with 11 points, followed by Skylar Barnes with 10. Nine Lady Tigers scored in that game.

The Team played Olive Branch last night in the last game before the Christmas holidays. Scores were not available at press time. The Teams will not be participating in any holiday tournaments and will be back in action January 5-7 in the Oxford Tournament.
