A woman charged with felony shoplifting from the Batesville Wal-Mart waived a preliminary hearing in Batesville Municipal Court and will have her case heard in circuit court. Ashley Throgmorton of 166 Front St., Pope, is also charged with possession of paraphernalia. She is being held in the Panola County Jail.
In another Wal-Mart shoplifting case, a plea-bargained agreement was reached by Barbara Cooper, 48 CR, Oxford, and city prosecutor Parker Still. Cooper, represented by an attorney, agreed to pay a reduced fine of $100 in exchange for her plea of guilty.
Open container
James Taylor of 215 Vance St., Batesville, charged with having an open container of beer on March 10, told the judge that he was in his own yard when Sgt. Ruby Myers filed the charge against him. Sgt. Myers testified that Taylor came onto the street in front of his apartment and that is where she charged him.
Judge McKenzie found Taylor guilty, but reduced the fine to $122.50.
Leaving the scene
Cornelius Wells of 217 Noble St., Batesville, pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, no proof of insurance, no tag and possession of marijuana.
He was fined $1,829, but Judge McKenzie told Wells that he would reduce the fine if Wells can provide proof that he has secured insurance for his vehicle.
Contempt of court
Eric Towns of 705 Jones St., Crenshaw, asked for and was allowed 30 days to pay contempt of court fines of $374 he has owed since 2001. He faces six months in jail if he fails to comply.
Judge McKenzie revoked the suspended six month jail sentence he had imposed against Jake Norwood of 90 CR 401, Oxford in May, 2004. Norwood had amassed $1,201 in unpaid fines dating back to 2003. He was given until May, 2004 to pay the total, but had not done so.
Norwood was incarcerated following his hearing.
Justina Conner of 90 CR 401, Oxford, was ordered to pay a contempt of court fine of $395, owed since June of 2004, by September 15, 2005.
Kimberly Lee of 111 Clinton St., Batesville, requested to be assigned to the city’s work release program to satisfy her fine of $435 which she has owed since November, 2003.
Transferred to circuit court
Leslie Shields of 238 Pearson St., Batesville, will face felony charges of DUI (third offense), and driving while his license is suspended for a previous DUI, reckless driving, running a stop sign and no insurance. The case has been transferred from city court to circuit.
Cases continued
Christopher Whitten of 117 Hoskins Road, Batesville pleaded not guilty to a charge of discharging a firearm in the city limits. Judge McKenzie set his trial for next Wednesday, March 30.
The judge dismissed additional charges of simple assault and malicious mischief when the affiant in those charges, Curtis Henderson, failed to appear in court to prosecute the case.
The case of Sky Randy Braxton, 206 Tubbs Rd., Batesville, was continued. He is charged with simple assault, failure to yield to blue lights, no driver’s license, running a stop sign. He also has old fines of $1,717.
Also continued was a contempt of court charge filed against Robert Grant of 99 Whipporwill Rd., Pope. Grant told the judge he had paid the tickets in question. He is to return to court April 6 to provide proof.
William Stewart told Judge McKenzie that a ticket for driving while his license is suspended issued in August, 2003, was not his ticket. He is to return for trial April 13.
Tickets
Thomas S. Deshler of 201 Autumn Dr., Eupora, was fined $120 for speeding and was enrolled in the defensive driving course that will allow the ticket to be kept off his driving record.
Also signing up for driving school was Leland Brown of 2883 Tidwell, Batesville, who pleaded guilty to a speeding charge.
Caleb Arthur Ruckdeschel of 814 Buena Vista St., Pascagoula, was also enrolled in the driving school after he pleaded guilty to speeding.
Kendall Morrow of 750 Randolph Rd., Batesville pleaded guilty to speeding and was enrolled in the driving school.
Elizabeth Gleaton of 181 Sherwood Dr., Batesville, provided proof that her vehicle is insured and had her fine reduced to $155.
Lashawn McWright of 239 School Park Dr., Leland, pleaded guilty to speeding and was enrolled in the driving school. He was fined $99.
Brandon C. Whitt of 2213-C Cold Springs, Sardis, was fined $155 after he provided proof that his vehicle is insured.
