On Saturday, May 1 starting at 10 a.m. at the multi-purpose building near Wal-Mart, Panola Countians will get the opportunity to help raise money for Adam Connor, Josh Mackey, Kaitlyn Herron and Levi Taylor’s medical expenses through the 2004 Answered Prayer Benefit.

The Answered Prayer Benefit is a collective effort between founder Charles West, The Batesville Kiwanis Club, The City of Batesville, South Panola Lions Club, Batesville Lions Club, Batesville Civitan Club and the Dream Riders.

West who came up with idea for the benefit during the Christmas season of 2000, said this is his way of helping the ones who need the most help.

"I prayed about it and asked God what I could do to help some children I heard about," he said. "The idea for the benefit came to me later in the night."

West said the event has gotten bigger each year as it tries to help more children.

"We have reached a point where we have a committee to screen the applications we have coming in," he said. "That committee is made up of members from the civic organizations helping with the event."

This year the money raised will be split to help Connor who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Mackey who suffers from seizures as result of a stroke he had at 3 months old, Herron was diagnosed with Tricustid Stenosis/Pulmonary Stenosis and Taylor who suffers from Pierre Robin Syndrome.

"We have picked four wonderful children," West said. "And they all come from hard working families.

"Our goal is just to help them with the bills that can get out of control," he said.

The money will be disbursed over the year whenever a medical situation arises, West said. It will not be awarded in one lump some.

Special Quilt is Homemade

Hometown friends.

That’s what’s at the heart of a special quilt that’s composed of blocks made by the "girls" who grew up together here, said Sammie Bramlett Simpson of Murphy, N.C.

Simpson, a graduate of the Batesville High School Class of 1959, came up with the idea for the quilt as a way to "commemorate" the special friendships.

"I call it a memory-celebration-comfort quilt," Bramlett said when sharing the story with The Panolian.

"It is composed of blocks done by each of 10 of my hometown friends," she said. "We all grew up in Batesville and went to school from first grade through 12th grade. Even though we don’t see one another much, we have stayed in touch all these years."

In addition to Bramlett, the "friends" include Frances Banks Amis and Bess Hawken Neal Darby, both of Batesville; Wanda Smith Cockrell of Little Rock; Kennie Robison Bumpas of Madison, Miss.; Patsy Robison Magee of Shreveport, La.; Camille Irby Davis of Richardson, Texas; Marilyn Ferrell Faithful of Memphis; Kathryn Carlson Smith of Heber Springs; and the late Pam Myers Davis who lived in Hot Springs, Ark.

Springfest Plans Revealed

The Batesville Main Street Program expects better than 10,000 people to attend this year’s Springfest on May 15-16, Main Street Manager Colleen Clark said.

"We have different bands this year, and we have added some new activities, so there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy over the two days of Springfest," she said.

Clark said along with headliner Brian McComas who had a number one video on CMT with "99.9 Percent Sure," other acts have committed to playing the festival.

"We are very excited to have Brian McComas," she said. "But there will be musical acts of different genres playing at Springfest.

"We promise the people in the crowd will hear something they will like over those two days," Clark added.

In addition to McComas, Clark announced that KC Ray and the Southside Rockers, One More Time, Soule, the Lane Chapel Quartet, Tennessee Boltsmokers, The Myles Family, Cory Brannon, Lucero, The Bearcats and Bill Haley’s Comets will play either Friday or Saturday, but the schedule is not finalized.
