As of Tuesday morning, four suspects are in custody – each charged with second degree murder – in the shooting death of 13-year-old Cazarius Gardner at the corner of Everette and Claude Streets on Sunday, April 13.
Deputy Chief of Police Barry Thompson said investigators have worked the case continuously since the fatal shots were fired near midnight. “We have all the primaries in custody and the public is not in any danger related to this case,” he said.
Arrested so far have been: El-Tavien Andrews (16), Jabari Byrd (17), Kaderius Frost (20), and Zyion Hughes (15).
“This was not a random incident,” Thompson said. “The victim was not the intended target.” Reports said the teen was the passenger in a parked car when the shooting began.
He was struck in the head and died at a Memphis hospital.
Thompson said two, and perhaps others, are expected to be arrested on the same charge. “They all set out in a concerted effort that caused the death of Cazarious Gardner, and we will work to have everyone involved charged by the prosecutors.”
Thompson said the shooting was loosely gang related.
