By Brad Greer
Despite key injuries that has plagued them throughout the season, the North Delta Lady Green Wave basketball team battled through adversity to capture the MAIS District 1-AAA championship with a 58-44 victory over Bayou Saturday at Indianola Academy.
The win marked the first district championship for North Delta since 2012.
The Lady Green Wave now advances to the North AAA State tournament in Columbus as they take on the host team Heritage Academy tomorrow night at 7:45. The two teams met on the hardwood in November with North Delta coming away with a 62-31 win.
A victory would put North Delta (19-9) into the semi final round Friday at 5:15 against the Winston Academy/ Indianola winner with the championship game set for 2:15 Saturday.
Ally Alford scored 23 points in leading North Delta to the victory over Bayou. Shelby Grace Boone added 14 while Libby Miller added seven. Hannah Bollinger and Breck Brewer provided five each. Sydney Talley finished with three points and Eliza Morris chipped in with two.
North Delta reached the title game with a 55-48 win over host Indianola Friday. Alford again led the way with 29 points as the team’s only scorer in double figures.
Brewer followed with eight points while Boone and Bollinger provided six each. Sayle Stennett, Talley and Miller all contributed with two points each in the victory.
The North Delta boys meanwhile saw its season come to an end with an 86-54 loss to Lee Academy in the tournament Thursday night.
