Defendants owing old fines dominate city court docket

More than half of the defendants in Batesville Municipal Court held Wednesday answered to Judge Jay Westfaul for failing to pay old fines.
Tiffany Frierson, 4 Rubin Dr., Oxford, was ordered to return to court June 29.
Frierson had contempt of court-old fines of $647 due since November 2015.
“I want my case reopened,” she told the judge.
Frierson told the judge she was found not guilty of her charges and shouldn’t owe old fines.
The judge told her the court would investigate the matter and her case was continued.
Rachel D. Mister, 17279-C Hwy. 51, Sardis, had old fines of $2,590 due since February 2015.
She paid $2,000 the day of court and was given time served for the nine days she spent in jail awaiting trial for the remaining $590 she owed. Her fines were paid and entered in full.
Michael D. Fondren, 18 Earnestine Turner, Sardis, told the judge he forgot about his old fines of $1,313 due since February 2015.
He told the judge he could pay the fines in full next week.
He was ordered to have the fines paid in full or serve 60 days in jail.
Sheldon Baggett, 118 Garden Terrance, Oxford, paid old fines of $813 due since November 2015 in full prior to court.
Iesha Walters, 220 Noble St., Batesville, was ordered to have old fines of $656 due since March 2015 paid fin full by July 29 or serve time in jail.
Kashonda Elliott, 195 Arnold Dr., Starkville, had old fines of $1,146 due since September 2015. Elliot told the judge the fines would be paid in full by July 1.
Jarvis Allen, 107 Vance St., Batesville, had old fines of $1,146 due since July 2015.
Allen was given time served for the 11 days spent in jail awaiting trial.
His fines were satisfied.
Kaderrius L. Williams, 428 East Moore St., Greenville, entered a guilty plea to simple possession of controlled substance. He was fined $443.
James H. Mayer, 213 Court St., Batesville, had a case for simple possession of marijuana in a vehicle continued.  
 Portia Henderson, 126 Patterson St., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to malicious mischief. A trial was set for July 20.
Xiaogin Dong, 104 Tubbs Rd., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to malicious mischief. A trial was set for July 13.
Tonya Weathersby, 115 Eureka Rd., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to simple assault. A trial was set for July 20.
George Gross Jr., 2881 Terza Rd., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to simple assault. A trial was set for July 13.
Tony L. Bowie, 185 Old Panola, Como, had a domestic violence-simple assault case dismissed after Ruby Henderson failed to appear to prosecute.
Gregory Pride Jr., 11906 Hwy. 51, Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to domestic violence-simple assault filed by affiant, Kecia Hardy and also simple assault filed by Latoya Ford. A trial was set for July 20.
The defendant and affiants all have no contact orders.
Kellye E. Farris, 125 Panola Ave., Batesville, had a trial set for July 20 for DUI-second.
Excell Jackson, 310 Arizona St., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to DUI, no driver’s licenes and careless driving. He was fined $1,250.
Jimmy Appleton, 1036 Hubbard Rd.., Pope, had a trespassing charge remanded to the files pending good behavior.
Angelique W. Dubois, 105 Reid Rd., Louise, entered a guilty plea to simple possession of marijuana. She was fined $443.
