Judge refers two defendants to grand jury

Judge Jay Westfaul referred two cases over to the grand jury during Batesville Municipal Court held Wednesday.

Don Staten, 627 Anderson St., Marks, was referred to the grand jury for grand larceny. His bond was set at $7,500.

Califfero Purnell, 224 Gordon Dr., Batesville, was bound over to the grand jury for possession of controlled substance-intent to distribute and his bond was set at $10,000.

Iesha Smith, 112 Eureka St. Apt. 4, Batesville, entered a guilty plea to false identifying information. She was fined $632. 

She also had old fines of $1,416.25 due since February 2014. Smith paid her fines before court was over.

Marluntay Brownlee, 111 Lester St. Apt. C, Batesville, had a disorderly conduct charge remanded to the files at the request of the affiant, Thomas Stone with Mississippi Security.

Roderick Scurlock, 253 James Rd., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to domestic violence-simple assault. He was fined $402.

Kendrick Flowers, 103 Warner St., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to domestic violence-simple assault. A trial was set for August 13. 

He also had old fines of $1,187.50 that have been due since November 2013.

He told the judge he had been incarcerated and was not able to pay his fines.

He was given 90 days to have his fines paid in full after explaining to the judge he had a job.

Sebastian Juan Mateo, 507 West Longview Dr., New Albany, failed to appear to answer DUI, no driver’s license and open container. Alright Bonding was notified.

Gary Sneed Jr., was sentenced to time served for DUI, open container and driving while license suspended. Sneed is MDOC inmate. 

Jaterian Lee, 202 Vaughn St., Batesville, , entered a not guilty plea to possession of marijuana-less than an ounce. A trial was set for August 13. 

He had old fines of $396 paid in full before court was over. 

Shawndaryl Daniel, 6111 Guardian Ct. Apt. 6, Louisville, Ky., had a warrant issued after failing to appear to answer charges for possession of marijuana. 

Detrailous Webster, 2585-A Chapeltown Rd., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to possession of marijuana-less than an ounce. A trial was set for August 13.

Derrick Morning, 1229 Heafner Rd., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to possession of marijuana-less than an ounce. He was fined $428.

Willie B. Benson Jr., 3376-A Eureka Rd., Batesville, entered a guilty plea to possession of marijuana in a vehicle and was fined $668. 

Marsell Edwards, 418 Juanita St., Sardis, entered a guilty plea to two counts of simple possession of a controlled substance. He was fined $854.

Cases set for trial

Willie Draper, 205 Tubbs Rd., Batesville, had a case for simple assault by threat contiued.

James Overstreet, 218 Pollard St., Batesville, was represented by Attorney Jeff Padgett for DUI-first. He was fined $250 along with court assessments. 

Morgan Parducci, 645 Doughtery St., Coldwater, was represented by attorney Jeff Padgett for possession of marijuana in a vehicle. The case was continued.

Latonya Smith, 407 S. Laura St., Webb, had a case for petit larceny remanded to the files.

Charane Hewlette, 204 Lester St. Apt. C, Batesville, had a case for public drunk continued. A trial was set for August 6.

Keith Thornton, 1865 Crenshaw Rd., Dundee, was found guilty for false identifying information. He was fined $632.

Kawaii Phillips, 201 Atkins St., Sardis, was found not guilty of shoplifting after the loss prevention representative from Burke’s failed to appear to prosecute.
