William Harrison “Bill” Boyd

MEMPHIS — William Harrison “Bill” Boyd, 54, formerly of Batesville, died Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at his residence.

Services were held Sunday at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Boyd, born to the late Bobby and Ellen Boyd, graduated from West Panola School in 1977. He worked in the satellite and electronics field.

Survivors include: his wife of 13 years, Pat Polk Boyd; one son, James Robert Boyd of Jackson, Tenn.; one sister, Cindy Allgood (W.A.); and one brother, Van Boyd (Renee) of Batesville.

The family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105 or First United Methodist Church, 119 Panola Ave., Batesville, Miss. 38606

X-Xavier Dominique Hooks Jr. and X-Xavion Damone Hooks

BATESVILLE–X-Xavier Dominique Hooks Jr. and X-Xavion Damone Hooks, twin sons of Monica House and X-Xavier Hooks, were stillborn October 4, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

They are survived by four sisters, Alexis House, Jaliyah Vaughn, X-Zarriyah Griffin, and  X-Xavianna Butler, all of Batesville; two grandmothers, Martha House Young and Ashley Hooks Flowers, and one great-grandmother, Maudie Hooks, all of Batesville.

Joyce Ann Drake McGuire

POPE–Joyce Ann Drake, 64, died Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. 

Services were held Friday at Dickins Funeral Home. Rev. Chris Cooksey officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

McGuire, born Feb. 4, 1949, in Batesville, to Ivy Peek Drake of Pope and the late James Frank Drake was a retired waitress. 

Survivors along with her mother include: one daughter, Tammie Pickett of Pope; one son, Phillip Pickett of Pope; one sister, Ruby Goodnite of Pope and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to The American Heart Association. 

Donald Wayne “Don” Mills

POPE — Donald Wayne “Don” Mills, 58, died Friday, October 11, 2013, at his home.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Dr. Gary Berry and Melvin Crawley will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Mills, born Feb. 7, 1955, to Noel Douglas and Mary Fisher Mills, was a member of Pope Baptist Church.

He was a law enforcement officer. Before retiring in 2007, he served and protected the Oxford community for 23 years as lieutenant with the Oxford Police Department. During his tenure with OPD, Mills served as a uniform support officer, training and evidence officer and gunsmith. He competed as sniper with the S.W.A.T. team and worked with H.A.W.K. (Handling Alcohol Warrants & K- 9’s). In addition to his duties with OPD, he also served as a firearms instructor and Range Master at the F.W. “Buddy” East Training Complex. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Lafayette County Law Enforcement Officers Association and S.T.O.R.M. (Sobriety Trained Officers Representing Mississippi).

Survivors include his wife,  Ann McCurdy Mills of Pope; two daughters: Heather Mills Samuels (Matt) of Oxford and Elizabeth Mills of Pope; two sons: Davy Cox and Rich Cox (Tiffany) also of Pope; one sister: Sue Mills of Batesville, along with three brothers: Douglas Mills of Clarksville, Tenn., James “Jimmy” Mills of Batesville and Sammy Mills of Oxford; four grandchildren include: Hailee Cox, Michael Cox, Lori Beth Cox and Mary Kate Samuels; step-grandchildren include: Blair and Blake Champion.

The Mills family would be honored if memorial donations were given to any of the following: Pope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 34, Pope, Miss. 38658; The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675; or the Baptist Children’s Village, P.O. Box 27, Clinton, Miss. 39060-0027.

James R. Jernigan

SARDIS — James R. “Jerry” Jernigan, 95, died Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Oxford.

Services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Tribble presiding. Burial will follow in Hebron Cemetery, Sardis. Visitation will take place from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Wednesday at Wells Chapel.

Jernigan was born to Silas and Addie Enfinger Jernigan on November 17, 1917 in Milton, Fla. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Jernigan was a Licensed Insurance Agent, having written policies for Liberty National Insurance Company for 25 years. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and is survived by his wife: Ruth Neely Jernigan of Sardis.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Violet Parker

Violet Parker, 87, passed away in Crenshaw, Saturday October 12, 2013. 

The family received friends on Sunday at Hollywood Baptist Church in Sledge. The funeral service was also held at Hollywood Baptist Monday, October 14. Interment was at Longtown Cemetery.

Mrs. Parker was a retired seamstress from William Carter Co. in Senatobia and a member of Hollywood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter Patsy Haggins and is survived by her husband, J.B. Parker of Crenshaw, daughter Lorrie (Bob) Workman of Sledge; sons James (Lynda) Parker of Crenshaw, Ralph (Carolyn) Parker of Clinton; son in law Robert Haggins of Lexa, Ark.; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Hollywood Baptist or charity of choice.

Jane Figg Seale

BATESVILLE–Jane Figg Seale, 91, died Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Fairfield Assisted Living. She was the widow of Billy Seale.

Services were Sunday, October 13 at Dickins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ed Woodall officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Mrs. Seale was born September 17, 1923 to the late Forrest Eugene and Valeria Herring Figg.

She attended Blue Mountain College and graduated from Delta State University with a degree in education. She taught kindergarten throughout a long career.

A member of the DAR and the Batesville Woman’s Club, she also belonged to Batesville First United Methodist Church where she taught the kindergarten Sunday School class for many years.

Survivors include her sons, Brent Seale of Vicksburg and Forrest Seale of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Seale was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandy Seale Turner.

The family has asked that memorials be sent to the Batesville First United Methodist Church Children’s Education Fund.
