A police man hunt and car chase in Batesville December 7 has resulted in felony kidnapping and robbery charges and the referral of three defendants to the Panola County Grand Jury.
In Municipal Court Wednesday Judge Jay Westfaul held a preliminary hearing for Marcus Day, 7829 Bellwood, Indianapolis, Ind.
Waiving preliminary hearings were two other defendants in the case, George Mister Jr. (also known as “Boom”) 2325 Henderson Rd., Batesville, and Terrell T. Williams, 8123 E. 36th Place, Indianapolis, Ind.
All three are charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, simple assault, resisting arrest, possession of controlled substance and possession of firearm enhancement penalty.
All three remain in the Panola County Jail.
Testimony in Wednesday’s hearing by Detective Jeremiah Brown revealed that a woman reported being robbed, beaten, bound and left in a residence on Goodhaven Road on December 7. The woman escaped to a neighbor’s and filed a report. She described the vehicle her attackers had arrived in, and police eventually pursued and finally stopped a white Cadillac from which the three defendants immerged after wrecking the vehicle.
Det. Brown told the judge, “I was called to the scene after a report was made by a woman who was tied up, assaulted and had her wallet with $100 taken.
“Following the report from the woman an officer in route saw the vehicle that later wrecked and the suspects were taken into custody.”
Brown said the victim reported she was hit in the head with a hand gun that knocked her out and a sheet was put on her head as she was hit repeatedly.
Brown testified that the victim remembered seeing a double barrel shot gun before she was knocked out.
“She said they kept saying, ‘Where are the drugs, where are the drugs?’” Brown testified from the victim’s report.
“She said they went through the house, tied her hands with wire and when they left they told her to not get up or they would kill her,” he testified.
Brown said the victim said she eventually went to the neighbor’s where the wire was cut from her wrist.
“I talked to the victim before she was taken by ambulance. I went across the street to look at the wire that was on her wrist along with the white sheet,” he said.
The markings on the victim’s arm matched the wire that was found, Brown said.
“I spoke with Mr. Day,” Brown continued. “He advised he came from Indiana a couple days prior with a couple of defendants to meet George Mister who had been planning to get money out of the victim’s house.”
Day, through his attorney, said he was not present when the robbery occurred. He said he had come to Mississippi to purchase a ham and visit family.
Day’s attorney, L. Maxey, asked Det. Brown about the ham.
“Yessir, the ham was found in the trunk of the car,” Brown answered.
Officer Justin Maples testified that he responded to a dispatch that day and saw the suspects’ vehicle at 111 Hoskins.
“It spun around the house when I pulled into the drive. There was a black and white rag around the tag,” Maples testified.
He said the vehicle almost hit him as it drove around the residence and exited the drive.
“It was a lengthy chase. The vehicle ran five stop signs and drove through yards finally hitting a drainage ditch at 107 Booker T.”
He testified the driver was Terrell Tyrone “Mike” Williams and passengers included: Joseph Davis, George Mister, Terrell Markevious Robinson and Marcus Day.
Maples said Officer Jeremy Hailey had Day at gunpoint after the chase when Day said, “I have nothing to do with it.”
Maples said they found a black and white jacket on the driver’s seat with crack cocaine hidden in it, a monkey wrench, broken glasses and an open pocket knife.
“We found a double barrel shotgun at 111 Hoskins where the car stopped and a loaded handgun at 109 Hoskins,” the officer said.
Maples said officers found shells in the trunk of the car along with the ham.
Day’s lawyer said, “There’s no motive, there’s half a pig in the trunk. He was trying to get back home. It’s a fact he was put out of the car. He felt something wasn’t right.”
Brown testified the victim and a witness placed Day at the scene. Another witness saw the white Cadillac pull up to the Goodhaven residence as she walked her dog, Brown said.
The judge referred Day to the grand jury.
