S-T-O-P means stop; traffic needs to slow down

Stop signs seem to be popping up all over Batesville, and to me that is a good thing.

People in the City of Batesville have been driving way too fast for quite some time now, including myself.

For whatever reason, some people are highly offended at having to stop at a stop sign and are refusing to stop. They are purposely breaking the law.

Stop signs have been placed in certain areas of Batesville where traffic is going way too fast. This is just a way to slow people down and make it safer for families that reside on that street.

What is so wrong with making our streets a safer place for our families and why are people so angry about it? It makes no sense to me. If a stop sign will keep some child from being killed by a vehicle traveling way too fast, then a stop sign is, for sure, a good thing.

Thanks to Eddie Nabors and the city board of aldermen, the street I live on — East Street — got a stop sign several months ago. We have lots of traffic coming off Highway 51 and people are driving way too fast. But now we have another problem: some people do not want to stop at the stop sign and absolutely refuse to stop. I had a meeting with Police Chief Tony Jones regarding the problem. He was not aware of the problem we were having and assured me that he would have patrolmen in the area to correct the problem.

So the next time you come to a stop sign, remember, S-T-O-P means STOP. It was put there to slow you down, not make you mad.

Is a stop sign really such a bad thing if it saves someone’s life?

Before I close, on behalf of all East Street residents, I want to say ‘thank you,’ Eddie Nabors and the city board of aldermen, for paving our street last week. It looks great and we appreciate it very much.
