Farmers market starts third year, honors Pounders

By Rita Howell

Batesville’s Square Market weekly farmers market will open its third year tomorrow with a special opening ceremony at 2:30 p.m. on the Downtown Square.

This year the market’s trademark banner with its tomato logo will be displayed with an added message:

“Growing in the spirit of Bobbie Jean Pounders.”

Pounders was a driving force behind the establishment of the farmers market in 2010. A former city alderman and longtime civic activist, Pounders died earlier this year.

A short program will pay tribute to Pounders according to Colleen Clark, Batesville Main Street manager and director of the market.
