North Delta almost swept the district series with Carroll Academy but errors changed their plans.
After last Tuesday’s 14-3 win over Carroll, it did not seem as if the Green Wave should anticipate any trouble but at home Carroll pulled out all stops.
In a district doubleheader Thursday, the teams split the twin bill. North Delta (9-8-1 overall, 2-1 district) won the first game 6-3 and Carroll won the nightcap 11-10.
In the first game, North Delta (9-8-1 overall, 2-1 district) scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Tyler Pirtle doubled to get on base and later scored. Luke Latham got on base and scored on an Ethan Waldrip double.
Will Magee singled in the second inning and scored on a single by Chase Coker. It would be the sixth inning before the Green Wave scored again. In the meantime, Carroll scores two runs in the first.
In top of the sixth, Coker drew a walk and later scored on a single by Bailey Guckert. Carroll pulled within one by scoring a run in the bottom of the frame.
Skylar Lawson and Coker added insurance runs in top of the seventh on a double by Pirtle while Waldrip, pitching in relief of Lawson who started, pitched a no-hit seventh inning.
Game 2
Carroll led 8-1 going into the third inning after scoring six runs in bottom of the second.
The Green Wave started chipping away at the lead by scoring three runs on four doubles in the third. Pirtle, Latham and Hunter Durham all doubled and scored. Waldrip also doubled driving Durham home to cut the lead 8-4.
In top of the sixth, the Green Wave tied the score at eight on runs by Magee, Coker, Pirtle and Guckert on RBIs by Pirtle, two on a double, Latham and Durham.
Carroll answered with three runs in bottom of the inning to take an 11-8 lead.
North Delta threatened but could only get two runs across, by Sy Pritchard and Magee, before a strikeout ended the game.
Waldrip pitched the complete game for the Green Wave, striking out eight.
