But these Mississippians shouldn’t have to worry about how they’ll pay to keep cool or feel forced to turn their cool air off. Qualified low income, elderly and disabled Mississippians can get bill payment assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Though LIHEAP funding has been slashed there is money available now for qualified Mississippians in need.

The Mississippi Department of Human Services recently asked utilities like Entergy to help spread the word. Every Mississippian who uses electricity and/or gas and qualifies for the program can receive assistance, no matter who supplies their energy.

For more information, go to mdhs.state.ms.us/csdir.html  and click on Community Action Agencies. To start the application process for assistance with your energy bill, go to https://virtualroma.mdhs.ms.gov/.

Entergy Mississippi also provides bill payment assistance to the elderly and disabled through the Power to Care fund, which is administered by the Salvation Army.

In Panola County, the partnering agency is Mid-State Opportunity. The number is 662-487-3076.
