POPE– Joan Wray Campbell, 80, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at her residence.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Courtland. Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home.

Mrs. Campbell, born April 18, 1930, in Pope, to Andrew Oliver and Addie Pearl Selby Wray, was a homemaker. Her family established Wray’s Chapel Church of God in Pope where she was a member.

Survivors include: her husband, Robert F. Campbell of Pope; four daughters, Sherry Campbell Martin and her husband, Darrell of Water Valley, Nancy Campbell Major of Batesville, Jill Campbell Addington and her husband, Mike of Courtland, Pegy Campbell Lott and her husband, Dennis of Batesville; three sons, Mike Campbell and his wife, Brenda of Pope, Steve Campbell of Pope and Tim “Sparky” Campbell and his wife, Courtney of Pope; one sister, Imogene Wray Williford of Pope; two brothers, Norris Wray of Batesville and Reed Wray of Little Rock, Ark.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Alex Earl “Sonny” Jackson

WHITFIELD– Alex Earl “Sonny” Jackson, 64, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at JaQuith Nursing Home in Whitfield.

Services will be held Wednesday at noon at Viney Creek M.B. Church in Sardis. Pastor Henry Kelly Wall Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Viney Creek Cemetery in Sardis. Visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Wednesday from 11 a.m. – noon at Viney Creek M.B. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Jackson, born March 15, 1946, in Charleston, to the late John Henry Jackson and Essie Dell Johnson, was a member of New Town M.B. Church in Charleston.

Survivors include: four sisters, Essie Wall of Sardis, Maxine McDowell of Charleston, Elvira Yancy and Dorothy Streeter, both of Chicago; one brother, Sylvester Jackson of Chicago and two grandchildren.

Norva Louise Davis Kitchens

BATESVILLE– Norva Louise Davis Kitchens, 68, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel. Dr. Zannie Leland Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery in Courtland. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the funeral home and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church. Visitation will also be held Thursday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Kitchens, born Oct. 17, 1942, in Batesville, to the late Boyce Davis and Virgia Lee Cole Davis, was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she served as church secretary, choir member, youth choir organizer. She served as youth director and secretary of the mass choir for the Sardis District Missionary Baptist Association Sunday School and NBC Congress of North Mississippi.

A 1962 graduate of South Panola Training School, she continued her education at Alcorn A&M College, where she received her bachelor of science degree in business education and certification in library science.

She did further studies at Jackson State University, Delta State University and the University of Mississippi.

She began her life’s vocation as an educator at Allen Carver High School in Charleston where she taught business education. Later she returned to her alma mater and worked in the South Panola School District as the Media Center Specialist and Library Club advisor from 1967 until her retirement in 2006.

She was a member of the South Panola Association of Educators, the Mississippi Association of Educators, the National Educators Association and the National Librarians’ Assocation. She was also a member of the Panola County Chapter of Alcorn State University Alumni and an active member of the Omicron Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated for 16 years, where she served as financial secretary.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, KaTina Kitchens-Lloyd.

Survivors include: her husband of 44 years, Roosevelt Kitchens of Batesville; one son, Corey Kitchens of Memphis; two daughters, Krochelle Kitchens of Tupelo and Koretta Kitchens-Sullivan of Batesville; one step-son, Larry Cunningham of Albany, N.Y.; three brothers, Willie J. Davis of Batesville, Jimmy F. Davis Sr. and Boyce Davis Jr., both of Nashville and seven grandchildren, Halle, Haley, Bianca, Brandyce, Kylan and Kolby, all of Batesville and Dominique of Charleston.

R.W. “Mac” Moore Jr.

SARDIS– R.W. “Mac” Moore Jr., 49, died Sunday, February 20, 2011, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were held Tuesday, February 22, at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sadie Virginia Spencer Moore.

Survivors include: his wife, Wanda Kay Moore of Sardis; two sons, Rickey Jason Cleveland and James Randall Moore, both of Sardis; his father, R.W. Moore of Coldwater; two sisters, Shelia Hall of Southaven and Kitty Wright of Senatobia; two brothers, Edward L. Moore and Kelly Wayne Moore, both of Coldwater and five grandchildren.

Opal Thompson Martindale

POPE– Opal Thompson Martindale, 95, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were Monday at Wells Funeral Home. Dr. Gary Berry officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Martindale, born Oct. 19, 1915, in Calhoun County, to  the late Luther and Mattie Bruner Thompson, was a 1934 graduate of Water Valley High School. In 1937 she married Howard Martindale of Pope and they were married for 52 years before his death in 1989.

She was a member of Pope Baptist Church and a charter member of the Pope Woman’s Club and a charter member of the South Panola Community Hospital Auxiliary.

She worked as an assistant postal clerk for 18 years at the Pope Post Office. She was a part of several bridge clubs and was a founding member of the Pope Bridge Club.

Survivors include: two daughters, Janet Martindale Taylor and her husband, Ralph of Clinton and Karen Martindale Lewis and her husband, Ken of Pope. She is also survived by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Katrina Taylor Pace and her husband, Chris and their children, Rachael, Katie and Natalie, all of Clinton; Kennon Slade Lewis and his wife, Amy, and their children, Sam and Julie of Oxford; Brandon Martindale Lewis and his wife, Tracey of Baltimore, and Ashley Lewis Drumheller and her husband, David and their children, Trey and Carter of Batesville.

Betty Ree Sharp Stark

WATER VALLEY– Betty Ree Sharp Stark, 71, died Thursday, March 3, 2011, at her daughter’s residence in Batesville.

Services were Sunday at Seven Oaks Funeral Home. David Freeman officiated. Burial was in Pinecrest Cmetery. Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley had charge.

Stark, born to the late Charlie Wayne and Lillie Belle Suell Sharp in Lafayette County, worked for 33 years as a seamstress at Big Yank Corp. in Water Valley. She was a member of First Christian Church, the Ladies’ Circle and a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader.

She was the widow of Troy Stark Sr.

Survivors include: one daughter, Lisa Melton of Batesville; two sons, Troy Stark Jr. of Tula and Ronnie Stark of Water Valley; four sisters, Patsy Sharp, Jackie Sharp and Martha Crocker, all of Tula and Wanda Lambert of Water Valley; two brothers, Barney Sharp of Tula and Travis Sharp of Water Valley and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
