SP Lady Tigers take down state slowpitch champions Grenada

 By Angie Ledbetter

The throne has belonged to the Grenada Lady Chargers for over six years but now the South Panola Lady Tigers are perched on it after Tuesday night’s 6-4 district win.

The Lady Tigers remain undefeated with a 4-0 record after the win and sit in first place in the district.

The Lady Chargers got on the score board first with one run in top of the first. The Lady Tigers added two runs when Christa Brown and Amanda Ivy scored in the bottom of the frame.

The Lady Chargers tied the game at two in top of the third. Ivy’s run in the bottom of the frame put the Lady Tigers up by one.

Grenada tied the game at three in top of the fourth.

In bottom of the sixth, the Lady Tigers’ bats exploded with runs by Olivia Taylor, Chresha Brown and Sarah Cole.

Shortstop Ivy led the pack with two runs scored from a double and single. Center fielder Christa Brown hit a single and double with one run scored. First baseman Danielle Townsend singled and later hit a ground-rule double after the ball bounced over the fence.

Olivia Taylor relieved Townsend as courtesy runner and scored.

Right center Chresha Brown had a double, a single and one run. Right fielder Cole singled followed by a double and scored one run. Recording one hit each were third baseman Meri Morgan Fortune, pitcher Dorian Winfield and left fielder Crystal Contreras. Second baseman Marla Rudd had two hits.

Recording RBIs (runs batted in) for the Lady Tigers were Chresha Brown, two; Townsend, Cole, Rudd and Contreras one each. Picking up the win was Winfield.

“It’s been awhile and we’ve had a stigma with Grenada for the last several years,” Lady Tiger head coach Kim Wilson said. “They’re a two-time state championship team and have an extreme amount of confidence. We do, too, except when it comes to Grenada. My main concern was how they’d react when they saw that Grenada county bus roll up but they had been telling me all day that they were ready and had this game. This team is loaded with ability with great defense and people that can kill the ball. I think this game gave them the confidence like Grenada had. It’s always nice remaining undefeated also.”

Last Thursday the Lady Tigers traveled to Independence and returned home with a 4-2 victory.

The score was tied at one in bottom of the first. The Lady Tigers led 2-1 lead going into the fifth and added two runs.

Independence fought back in the bottom of the sixth scoring one run but the Lady Tigers defense held.

“The story of the game was the defense, especially with Ivy at shortstop and Contreras at left field,” Wilson said.

Ivy was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Christa Brown and Fortune were 2-for-4 with one RBI each. Taylor was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Contreras and Rudd had one hit also.

The Lady Tigers traveled to Marks Thursday to take on M.S. Palmer and will be back at home on Tuesday at 4 when they host Independence.
