James Price “Jimmy” Cook Sr.

BATESVILLE – James Price “Jimmy” Cook Sr. died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Baptist Hospital—North Mississippi in Oxford.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 7 at First Baptist Church in Batesville. Dr. Jay Cook officiated and was assisted by Dr. David Ball. Interment was at Magnolia Cemetery.

Dickins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born July 9, 1939 in Lafayette County, he was the son of the late Winfred Sutton Cook Sr. and Sarah Frances Spencer Cook. A graduate of Mississippi State University, he retired after 36 years as Panola County District Soil Conservationist.

Former chairman of deacons of First Baptist, he served as Sunday School superintendent and teacher for 30 years and as chairman of numerous committees. He was a member of the Cross Ministry and participated in mission work throughout the United States.

He was  past president of the Civitan Club, a former member of the Jaycees and the Panola County Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Ann Oliphant Cook; a daughter, Celia Cook Ford of Columbus; a son, Dr. James (Jay) Price Cook, Jr. of Pascagoula; and a sister, Maudene Cook McCain of Water Valley and four grandchildren.

Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church, Cross Ministry or Alzheimer’s Association.

J. C. Dickey

BATESVILLE– J. C. Dickey, 86, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Golden Living Nursing Home in Batesville.

Funeral services were Friday, June 4 at Wells in Batesville with interment in Magnolia Cemetery. Justine McCreary officiated and Wells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born January 30, 1924 in Water Valley, he was the son of the late Joseph Melton and Myrtis Castleberry Dickey. A member of Water Valley First Baptist Church, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include three daughters, Diane Dickey Coleman of Batesville, Pam Dickey Griffis of Davie, Fla. and Angie Dickey Milta of Naples, Fla.; one son, John Vernon Almon of Little Rock, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Addie Pauline Henderson

BATESVILLE– Addie Pauline Henderson, 80, died Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Baptist Memorial Hospital–North Mississippi in Oxford.

Funeral services are today, Tuesday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at Spring Hill Asa M.B. Church with interment in the church cemetery. A visitation will precede the funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. at the church. Rev. Louis Wilson will officiate and Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Born January 6, 1930 in Batesville to the later Junius Kuykendall and Gertrude Coppage, she was a housewife, farmer and member of Spring Hill Asa M.B. Church.

Survivors include eight daughters, Jeanette James of Memphis, Shirley Conner, Rosie Hamilton, Gloria Henderson, Aslean Lawson, Corine Blackburn, Annetta Johnson and Pauline Beach, all of Batesville; two step-daughters, Gloria Jean Johnson and Dorothy Jean Johnson, both of Chicago; four sons, Curtis Henderson Sr., Cecil Henderson, Vanl Henderson, all of Batesville and Eugene Henderson of Memphis; two stepsons, Willie Earl Buck and Walter L. Henderson Sr., both of Crenshaw and a sister, Aslean Lee of Batesville.

Vickie Diane Johns Ward

BATESVILLE – Funeral services are today, Tuesday, June 8 for Vickie Diane Ward, 61, at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home.

She died Saturday June 5 at a friend’s home in the Locke Station Community.

Interment will be at Forrest Memorial Park. Rev. Ray Legge is the officiating minister and Wells Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born January 26, 1949 in Bateville to the late Lemuel “L.M.” Maxwell and Frances Houston Johns. She attended Locke Station Baptist Church and was a factory worker at Emhart.

She is survived by her son, Benjamin “Benji” Baxter of Sardis; stepson Greg Ward of Como; stepdaughter Carla Collums of Senatobia; sisters Sissy Johns Wilson, Mary Ida Johns Lequex, both of Batesville; brothers David “Bubba” Johns of Blaine, Johnny Ray Johns of Lambert; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Doris Marie Hamblin Mayo

SARAH– Funeral services for Doris Marie Hamblin Mayo, 68, of Sarah were Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Kimbro Funeral Home in Marks.

She died May 31 in Mattoon, Ill. in an auto accident.

Burial was at Longtown Cemetery and Rev. Roy Hartzell was the officiating minister. Kimbro Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born in Houlka August, 15, 1941, she was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church and a retired postmaster

She is survived by a son, Sam Mayo of Sarah; six sisters, Myrtle Mayo of Crenshaw, Earline Parrish and Ellen Matthews, both of Sledge, Mary Sue McCarty of Southaven, Frances Brewer of Kennet, Mo., Gertrude Fair of Westpoint; one brother Jake Hamblin of Salem, Ill. and one grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Crisis Pregnancy Center in Clarksdale, Tunica County Nursing Home and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sammy Dean Williams

LOYALTON, CALIF. – Batesville native Sammy Dean Williams, 63, died May 29 at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev.

Graveside services were held June 5 at Mountain View Cemetery in Loyalton, where he made his home.

He was born in Batesville on December 26, 1946 to the late Jimmie E. and Vivian Geneva Mays Williams. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for 30 years at Sierra Pacific Industries in Loyalton.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Henrietta Maria Espana Williams of Loyalton; three brothers, Billy Newton Williams of Sardis, Marlo Coy Williams of Loyalton and Leonard Roy Williams of Rio Oso, Calif.
