John Henry Black

CARROLLTON–John Henry Black, 74, formerly of Marks, died Sunday, February 8, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. He was the father of South Panola teacher, Debbie  Black Fletcher of Sardis.

Memorial services will be today at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Grenada. Rev. Guss Shelly will officiate. Visitation with the family will be at 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Black  owned and operated John Black Construction Company for 35 years before retiring to raise horses on his farm near Grenada. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Grenada and was vice president of Poorhouse Water Association. He was born on March 12, 1934, the seventh child of Judge Elbert Cecil and Velora Wright Black of Marks.

 Survivors along with his daughter include: his wife of 56 years, Barbara Vaughan Black; his son, John H. Black Jr., of Carrollton; his son-in-law J.Crisler “Cris” Fletcher of Sardis; two grandsons, Joseph C. “Joey” Fletcher Jr., of Jackson and Vaughan H. Fletcher of Sardis and a sister, Imogene Black Gordy of Hazelhurst.

Mary Margaret Galberry

HATTIESBURG–Mary Margaret Galberry, 86, formerly of Batesville, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg.

Services were Saturday at McClain-Hays Funeral Home in Philadelphia. Burial was in Eastlawn Cemetery. McClain-Hays Funeral Home had charge.

Galberry, born Nov. 10, 1922, in Sumrall, to the late John and Ida Saucier, attended Mississippi Women’s College. She served as Girl Scout troop leader, taught vacation Bible school and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia where she was a long-time member of the Hope Sunday School class.

She was a former member of the Lydian Music Club, the Home Arts Club, Philadelphia Country Club and various bridge clubs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Stearns Galberry.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mary Linda Pair of Ellisville; two sons, Dr. John Henry Galberry of Lakeland, Fla. and Scott Saucier Galberry of Hattiesburg; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Agnes Houston Girner

SARDIS–Mary Agnes Houston Girner, 87, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services are today at 11 a.m. at the Sardis Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Rev. Ray Cross and Rev. Karen O’Brien will officiate. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home has charge.

Girner, born Nov. 22, 1921, to the late Thomas Houston and Annie Lucille White Houston, was a member of the Sardis Presbyterian Church, Sardis Women’s Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sardis Chamber of Commerce and the Heflin House Museum. She was the owner and operator of Sardis Florist for 56 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Girner Sr.

Survivors include: one daughter, Kay Girner Wolfe of Sardis; one son, Roy Girner Jr. of Batesville; one sister, Lima Littleton of Como; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Albert Griffin Sr.

ENID–Albert Griffin Sr., 80, died Monday, February 9, 2009, while residing with his daughter, Linda Gail Griffin Urban in Senatobia.

Memorial services were Thursday at Bethel Methodist Church in Tallahatchie County. His nephew, Rev. Tom McCallister of Winona, officiated. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Griffin, born in Clarksdale, Oct. 7, 1928, to the late John Thomas and Maude Boston Griffin, was a graduate of Mississippi State University with a degree in body and fender repair. He was a veteran of the Army and served in WWII. He was a member of Pharsalia Baptist Church in Pope.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Rebecca Crosthwait Griffin.

Survivors along with his daughter, include: one son, Albert  “Pete” Griffin Jr. of Enid; one daughter, Patricia Ann Griffin Jones of Batesville; one sister, Catherine Coker of Greenville; four grandchildren, Serena Ann Selby Smith, Joshua Joseph Griffin, Anna Fillyway, Scott Fillyway and one great-grandchild, Travis Ethan Burt.

Joe L. Houston

CROWDER–Joe L. Houston, 79, died Saturday, February 7, 2009.

Services are today at 1 p.m. at Nelson Chapel M.B. Church. Rev. Fred Butts will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home has charge.

Houston, born Sept. 9, 1929, to the late John Houston and Hattie M. Metcall, was a farmer and a member of Nelson Chapel M.B. Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Bobbie Stinson and Betty Stinson, both of Chicago and one sister, Will Eva Stokes of Crowder.

Joseph Andrew Krencik

BATESVILLE–Joseph Andrew “Polok” Krencik, 73, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at his residence.

Services are today at  2 p.m. at Hosanna Family Worship Center in Pope. Rev. Dammon Plummer and Rev. Rayford Ables will officiate. Visitation will be held noon until service at Hosanna. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Krencik, born Oct. 11, 1935, in Washington, Pa. of Polish parents, the late Thomas and Frances Gulza Krencik, was the youngest of 17 children. He worked for Georgia Pacific for 21 years as a Milwright/mechanic. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include: his wife of over 50 years, Velma Goodwin Krencik of Batesville; three sisters, Elizabeth Sevec of Washington, Pa., Mary Biediman of Wagontown, Pa. and Katherine Peterson of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Mike Krencik of Parkesburg, Pa.
