Red Sox remain in first place

Despite being out-hit 7-5, the Red Sox remained in first place Tuesday night with a 6-1 record after downing the Yankees 8-5 in 13-15 year-old baseball action at Americian Legion Field.

The Sox scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning off Yankee starting pitcher Colby Gammill. Chris Brown led off by reaching on an error followed by Ethan Waldrup and Blake Snider’s back-to-back walks. Dillon Redwine then smacked a two-run single into left to get the home team on the board.

Redwine later scored on a fielders choice by Jake Rogers. Calvin Hawkins drove in the final run of the inning with a RBI groundout to plate Rogers.

The Yankees roared back to tie the game  with a run in the second and a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings. Gammill led off the second inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.

Cameron Brown led off the third with a single followed by a Bobby Epps single. Gammill then crushed a triple to right-center bringing home Brown and Epps for a 5-3 Sox lead.

The Yankees then knotted the score in the top of the fifth as Brown led off again with a single followed by an RBI single from Epps. After a Gammill strike out, Chance Witten singled up the middle to drive home Epps.

But in the bottom half of the frame, the Sox took the lead for good with three runs on three hits as the first six batters reached base.

Snider, Austin Smith and Eric Booker all recorded singles. Waldrup picked up the win in relief of Brown by going three innings while fanning six and giving up three hits.

Epps meanwhile suffered the loss for the Yankees despite striking out 10 batters over five innings of work.

In the nightcap, the A’s downed the Royals 12-3.
