Defense gives Batesville Tigers Super Bowl title
By Brad Greer
The old adage a good offense is a good defense never was more true for the Batesville Tiger 9-and-10 year-old peewee team in their championship game versus Clarksdale Saturday morning in Oxford.
With its offense stuck in netural, the Tigers turned to their defense to come up with a key play as Kellen Norwood stepped in front of a Clarksdale pass and returned it seven yards for Batesville’s only score as the Tigers claimed the Youth Mississippi League Super Bowl with an 8-6 victory.
Things looked bleak for Batesville as the Tigers were stopped on fourth-and-goal at the Clarksdale one yard line with 6:15 remaining in the contest. But on the second play from scrimmage Norwood, who was named the game’s MVP, intercepted a pass and walked into the end zone. Michael Johnson, Jr. then booted the two-point PAT to give Batesville the lead.
After holding Clarksdale on downs on the following possession, the Tigers looked to run out the clock but fumbled on the Wildcat 48. Clarksdale moved the ball to Batesville’s 28 with 41 seconds remaining, but like the whole game unfolded, the Tiger defense stood tall and made the final stand.
Johnson led the Tigers in rushing with eight carries for 67 yards to go along with one catch for 25 yards. Norwood followed with 36 yards on seven totes. Antrayiyun Clark added one carry for three yards.
