Sheriff’s Report: Tragedy claims man at Cypress Point

On Sunday, July 24, dispatch was called to Cypress Point Beach in reference to a possible drowning.
At 4:36 p.m. Deputy Britton Crawford was dispatched to Cypress Point Beach at Sardis Lake.
Medstat arrived and transported to Merit Health and deputy advised that the subject gained a pulse after CPR was administered.
The Panolian later learned from Coroner Gracie Grant Gulledge that it was Palino Ramirez, 39, who was transported first to Merit Health, then by air ambulance to Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, where he later died.
Wells Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. (See related story on page A5.)
The Panola County Sheriff’s department received 41 calls for service from July 21 to July 28 which required assistance from Panola County deputies.
June 22
• Deputy Emily Griffin was dispatched to Sardis Lake Drive in reference to a simple assault.
According to the report, the parents of the victim stated their minor children were threatened by an individual while visiting a friend on Windover Drive.
The individual threatened to make an example out of their children because he believes they broke into his residence.
• Lieutenant Willie Harris responded to Ballentine Road where an individual reported her brother came to the house and got a bed.
According to the report, no one lives in the home and the owners were preparing to move when they noticed two air conditioners and a 60” flat screen TV were taken from the home.
Investigator Bryan Arnold was notified of the break-in.
• Mount Olivet Road resident reported to Deputy Maurice Market an individual came to her residence and took approximately $630 worth of medication from the home.
June 23
• Deputy Emily Griffin responded to Merit Health in reference to a report of domestic violence.
According to the report, the victim stated the suspect physically assaulted her by punching her several times in the face and pushing her into a glass cabinet at her residence.
The suspect turned himself in to Panola County Sheriff’s Office Jail on July 24.
• Turner Road, Sarah resident reported to Deputy John Still the suspect came to his residence where a dispute ensued and the suspect sprayed him with pepper spray.
According to the report, the resident stated he did not assault the suspect.
• Eureka Road resident reported a burglary to Deputy Britton Crawford, stating he returned home and noticed his front door was kicked open and noticed two small caliber pistols, .380 and .25, were missing from under his bed.
According to the report, Deputy Crawford has been to the residence on two other occasions when two juveniles broke into the residence and stole the same two pistols, a four wheeler battery and some change.
The weapons were returned by the grandfather of the juveniles. A “be on the look out” was placed on the suspect’s vehicle.
• Deputy Crawford responded to a report of vandalism on Hadorn Road.
According to the report, the owner of the residence stated someone entered the unoccupied dwelling damaging a window and sprayed a fire extinguisher all over the apartment.
Deputy Crawford observed multiple foot prints noting in the report that the suspects appear to have been barefoot.
• Deputy George Renfroe spoke to a File Road resident who reported his phone was stolen at Dollar General.
According to the report, the resident set his phone down and store video footage shows two men leaving with the phone.
• Holston Road resident reported a disturbance to Deputy Crawford.
According to the report, the resident stated she and her uncle began arguing because he threw a chair at her dog.
The resident said she’s had a lot of trouble out of her uncle and that he has made some sexual advances toward her. The resident stated she is tired of dealing with him.
• Deputy Dean Jones spoke to an individual on Sardis Lake Drive who stated he rented the house to two individuals for the previous two years and they are $4,700 behind in rent.
The landlord stated he had to evict the renters. According to the report, the landlord gave the renters two weeks to voluntarily vacate the premises.
After two weeks the landlord went to Justice Court and had the renters served with an eviction notice.
According to the report, the landlord reported that the suspects caused $9,000 in damage and took several items that belonged to him.
The landlord plans to sue the renters for the damage, missing items and past due rent, according to the report.
• Henderson Road resident reported to Deputy Lee Martin that her mother went out to the driveway to get something out of her vehicle and a vehicle with a man and two women pulled up as the man asked about the location of another resident.
According to the report, the mother told them to leave the property and the they left.
The resident stated not long after the subjects left she heard two gun shots in the area. According to the report, Deputy Martin was unable to locate where the shots came from.
The resident requested that a deputy keep a check on her residence in case the subject returned.
June 24
• Deputy Martin investigated another incident on Henderson Road where a resident stated her husband had not returned their child and was in violation of a child custody order.
According to the report, the husband told his wife to call her lawyer about the incident. The resident wanted to have a report made to take to her lawyer.
• Hadorn Road resident reported to Deputy Emily Griffin someone damaged his vehicle while it was parked at his residence.
• Deputy Crawford spoke to a County Road 405 resident who stated a tree limb fell and struck a window on his Dodge van.
June 25
• Deputy Lott responded to Abe Hill Road for a report of shooting in progress and upon arrival noticed a gray Ford Explorer with four men backing out of the driveway trying to leave the residence.
According to the report, Deputy Lott stopped the individuals from leaving and was approached by the victim who stated “that’s him in the back seat on the driver’s side that pulled a gun and shot at me”.
According to the report, Deputy Lott and Lieutenant Chuck Tucker walked up to the vehicle and identified the shooter and advised him to step out of the vehicle and walk to the back of the vehicle.
As the suspect complied, Deputy Lott spoke with the victim who stated the suspect got into a fight with his brother and he got in between the two to try and break up the fight and that was when the suspect went and retrieved a gun and shot at him, according to the report.
The victim stated the suspect then gave the gun to some boys and that’s when he called 911.
The suspect was arrested and transported to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office. Investigator Bryan Arnold took over the investigation.
• Lieutenant Tucker spoke to a Booth Street resident who reported he was at a house on Central Academy Road when he walked outside to find his truck being picked up by a wrecker.
According to the report, the truck was running fine prior to the incident and won’t run at all now.
The resident reported that the suspect stated he would pay to fix the truck but has since then been avoiding his phone calls.
The incident occurred approximately three weeks from July 25.
•Lieutenant Harris spoke to a Ruby Road resident who reported someone trespassing on her property.
According to the report, the resident has a family member living on her property with her boyfriend and the boyfriend beats her, but her family member denies that she is being beaten.
The resident also stated that the suspect is selling drugs on her property and has young kids selling it for him, according to the report.
The resident stated she does not want the suspect on her property.
•Pocahontas Street, Sardis resident stated a male dog showed up at her house and he won’t leave her property.
According to the report, when the resident goes outside the dog jumps on her causing her to fall and the dog puts his mouth around her arm like he is going to bite her but he doesn’t bite her.
The resident stated she is afraid of the dog and doesn’t know who the dog belongs to.
June 26
• Lieutenant David Mills spoke to a McClyde Road resident who stated she and her boyfriend got into a fight.
According to the report, she told him she was going to leave him and he followed her and struck her with his fist in her face and head and grabbed her hair and threw her to the ground.
•West Pearl Street, Sardis resident reported to Deputy Market she was assaulted by two individuals who came onto her property threatening to do bodily harm to her and one individual attempted to strike her.
According to the report, the resident is seven months pregnant.
June 27
• Lieutenant Harris spoke to a Plum Point Road resident who reported someone took money from her account.
According to the report, someone has been taking money from the resident’s account since June 2016, with seven unauthorized transactions on her account from Paypal totaling $470.29.
The resident stated she noticed the transactions when someone attempted to take $206.10 out of her account and stated she had no knowledge nor did she give the suspect permission to take money from her account.
• Mallard Pointe resident stated to Investigator Jason Chrestman his son was using his Dodge pickup truck when his son’s wife took a gun and shot the truck a number of times.
According to the report, the estimate to have the truck fixed is $1,275.28.
• Highway 35, Sardis resident reported to Deputy Renfroe he observed a crack in his windshield and a rock laying under the windshield next to the wiper blade.
According to the report, he was directed to park in the rear of the ACI building.
June 28
•Nash Road resident stated some unknown subjects entered his residence and stole $85.
The resident reported to Deputy Jones entry was gained through the back door.
According to the report, the resident stated it was some of the neighborhood kids that broke into his home and that this is the ninth time they have broken into his residence.
• Deputy Crawford was patrolling Sardis Lake Drive and was flagged down by an individual who stated a female was staying at his residence assisting him around the house following surgeries.
According to the report, the subject left to go pick up a check in the resident’s Ford Explorer and hasn’t returned in four days.
The resident also stated she stole a credit card and had been making purchases in Oxford. The incident is under further investigation.
• Deputy Renfroe responded to Backwoods Bar and Grill where an individual reported unknown subjects stole two ice makers, two light up advertisement signs, numerous metal chairs, shelving for drink coolers, washing machine, cables for a wrecker and a Coke machine.
According to the report, all properties were outside the building. Investigator Bryan Arnold was notified.
• Deputy Griffin spoke with a Happy Lane, Oxford resident who reported her husband had taken their 2013 Ford F-250 pickup to Rebel Auto Repair to have it repaired and went back to pick it up and noticed that a .380 hand gun was missing from their middle console.
According to the report, the residents contacted Rebel Auto Repair and asked about their gun but have had no luck retrieving it.
•Randolph Road resident reported to Deputy Mark Allen someone tried to make an unauthorized purchase on her American Express card.
According to the report, American Express called the resident in regard to a purchase that was charged to her card, but was delivered to another address.
The resident stated the purchase was made with Plexus Worldwide but was declined by American Express due to different addresses for the mailing and billing addresses.
According to the report, the resident has since cancelled and shredded the card.
• Chief Chris Franklin notified the patrol shift that a disabled man was traveling by foot around Highway 315 and Park Place Road.
Major Barry Thompson and Deputy Crawford made the scene and placed the individual into the front passenger side of the patrol unit, then contacted Medstat and the Department of Human Services.
According to the report the subject lives on Deshmond Road, but didn’t know the address number.
The subject was taken to Circle Z where he likes to go and spend the day, according to the report.
•Lieutenant Mike Davis spoke to a Curtis Road resident reported to have received threatening text messages.
According to the report, the resident was advised to get a copy of the text messages from her cellular provider and place with the report.

July 21
• Vehicle one was turning into his driveway when another vehicle passed and struck vehicle one on Dummyline Road. An injury was reported.
July 23
• Vehicle lost control on Martindale Road.
• Vehicle lost control on Union Road. An injury was reported.
July 24
• Vehicle lost control on Kelsey Massie Road.
• Vehicle was struck as another veered into the other lane on Landfill Street.
July 25
• Vehicle hit a deer on Barnacre Road.
• Vehicle made an improper pass and hit another vehicle on Curtis Road. An injury was reported.
July 27
• Hit and run on Hunters Chapel Road.
• Car hit a deer on Chapel Town Road.
• Two car collision occurred on Curtis Road. An injury was reported.
July 28
• A rear end collision occurred on Lakewood Drive.
